US high court refuses to reinstate North Carolina voter ID

Source: The News & Observer

By GARY ROBERTSON Associated Press
RALEIGH, N.C.

A divided U.S. Supreme Court refused Wednesday to reinstate North Carolina’s voter identification requirement and keep just 10 days of early in-person voting. The court rejected a request by Gov. Pat McCrory and other state officials to delay a lower court ruling that found the state law was tainted by racial discrimination.

The decision – a victory for voting rights groups and President Barack Obama’s Justice Department – means voters won’t have to show one of several qualifying photo IDs when casting ballots in the presidential battleground state. Early voting also reverts to 17 days, to begin Oct. 20.

The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals struck down several parts of the law last month, saying they were approved by Republican legislators with intentional bias against black voters in mind. Lawyers for McCrory and the state officials – some hired by GOP legislative leaders who championed the 2013 law – disagreed with the 4th Circuit ruling and wanted a delay while they draft an appeal on legal arguments they want the Supreme Court to consider.

The high court divided 4-4 on most of the challenged provisions, with the four more conservative justices supporting the state’s bid to enforce them in the upcoming election. The split illustrates again how closely divided the Supreme Court is on voting rights and how the outcome of the presidential election essentially will determine the direction of the court.

I was going to try without ID just to see but immediately the woman said give me your ID and caused me to automatically hand it over. I was pissed at myself.

3. No justification for reinstating, institutionalizing racism.

The justices who voted to allow the ID and shortened voting period are diseased, not fit to serve.

Thank goodness North Carolina racists lost this nasty effort.

5. GOOD.

That crap has been struck down and there is no way they should be allowed to keep any of it just because they don't want to lose an election that's coming up soon.

17. Yes. Thomas alone voted to fully reinstate.

The other three morans voted for partial reinstatement pending outcome of court case.

and throw the electoral votes to our Democratic nominee like they did in 2008!

10. blue state DUers…. please donate dollars to NCDP.

NC is a blue state rigged to protect GOP incumbents. Help us get out the vote by donating to NC's GOTV efforts.

We can do this. We HAVE to.

11. Bravo. And all the litigation placed Republican racism on the front page during an election cycle.

And increased awareness of voter registration, voting requirements, early voting dates, and the importance of who appoints Supremes.

13. Where Party really matters

The 4 who care more about order than the right to vote were all appointed by repukes - Kennedy, Thomas, Roberts and Alito. Ginsburg, Breyer, Sotomayor and Kagan were appointed by Democrats. I do wonder how Garland would have voted on this one?

It could mean the end of free elections for POC all around this country.

As a Bernie supporter this is why Hillary is our only chance.

20. I came home form work yesterday and my husband said,

"Guess what! Scalia is dead!" and I was like, "Yes, I know." And he said, "Well today it mattered!"

4-4 deadlock. If Scalia was still alive, then the NC GOP's craptastic Monster Voter Suppression Bill would be too. Let's be CERTAIN they don't get a chance to do this to us again. GOTV!

23. By refusing to replace Scalia on the SC the Repugs have shown how precarious voting rights are in

America with a right leaning court

An eight member court brings out in high relief that in terms of civil rights it is us vs them, being people who believe in civil rights vs the altright who want to restrict them in favor of white corporate power enforced by extremist populism

We need Hillary, a Dem Senate and a Dem House to get the court moving in the direction of increasing and strength ing the right to vote. The movement by the Republican Governor's Association to restrict access to the ballot box by minorities and gerrymander congressional districts in order to favor the GOP has got to stop once and for all

What the US needs is for the electoral process to be taken out of the hands of corrupt state politicians and handed over to an truly independent Federal Election Board

31. YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!

It was great news for my state. The write up in the Winston-Salem Journal was awesome and brutally laid out how the Repubs tried to gut voting in my states. Tried and failed this time. With some luck we can flip the Senate this election cycle and return to a Blue or at least dark purple state….

34. Can this decision be applied to other states...

that have the same or similar laws?
Or does each state have to be decided individually?

The morans in this state keep trying and may have passed
a similar law and over-rided(sp?) the veto.

And they're proud of it.

ASSHOLES!
