Rio Olympics Today: The First Gold Medal Goes to ..American Shooter Virginia Thrasher
Source: NY Times
We already have a gold medalist, and it’s a 19-year-old West Virginia University sophomore, Virginia Thrasher. With two shots to go in the women’s air rifle event, Thrasher, who is known as Ginny, led by 0.7 points. She coolly squeezed off shots of 10.5 and 10.4 to take gold. Two Chinese shooters, Du Li and favored Yi Siling won silver and bronze. Another American, Sarah Scherer was eighth. Thrasher has only been shooting for five years, after she asked her father to take her deer hunting. She was N.C.A.A. champion as a freshman and surprisingly qualified for the U.S. team at the Olympic Trials. “For me, it has been a whirlwind of a summer,” she said. She will also compete in the 50-meter rifle, three positions, next Saturday, then head back to W.V.U. Read more: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/06/sports/olympics/rio-games-schedule.html?_r=0

1. It's sad that something promoting violence...
is still allowed in the Olympics.

5. I'm going to go out on a limb and say she has probably never shot anybody in her life
She has however spent most of her life training in a sport, and at least today, was the best.

6. Most gun owners haren't shot someone either...
but they are still responsible for the culture of death in this country.

7. I guess by that logic since I drink beer I'm responsible for those deaths as well?
Which by the way are 3x the number of gun deaths.

8. She's spent barely a quarter of her life training for the sport.
But she's obviously a natural at it.

11. Plenty of sports in the Olympics have a martial history.
Archery, boxing, fencing, judo, taekwondo, wrestling and whatever sport you throw a javelin in.

14. having such a sad
When an American wins the first gold medal of the Olympics is a great way to win friends and influence people.
Now lets pray than we do not win medals in archery, javelin, wrestling, boxing and all those kung-fu type sports. While I am a proponent of much stricter gun control, being sad that an American won the BB gun competition is extremely counter productive. |

15. I've yet to hear of a bad guy/gal with a pellet gun
The only guns I own are two pellet guns, a crossman 2240 co2 pellet pistol and a sheridan 2260 co2 air rifle. I enjoy shooting them but you won't have to worry with me thinking I can do any damage with either as they simply don't have the fire power to do it. So I guess you could call me a good guy with a gun.
