Wikileaks posts nearly 20,000 hacked DNC emails online

Source: Washington Post

Wikileaks posted a massive trove of internal Democratic National Committee emails online Friday, in what the organization dubbed the first of a new "Hillary Leaks" series.

The cache includes nearly 20,000 emails and more than 8,000 file attachments from the inboxes of seven key staffers of the DNC, including communications director Luis Miranda and national finance director Jordan Kaplan, according to the Wikileaks website. The emails span from January 2015 through late May and are presented in a searchable database.

<snip>

A hacker known as Guccifer 2.0 claimed credit for handing the documents over to Wikileaks on Twitter. However, some experts have expressed skepticism about his involvement, citing differences between the data Wikileaks released and Guccifer 2.0's previous leaks of hacked data.

The Democratic Party has had its share of cybersecurity woes recently. Last month, the DNC acknowledged that its systems had been breached.

WikiLeaks releases thousands of documents about Clinton and internal deliberations

By Tom Hamburger and Karen Tumulty July 22 at 4:28 PM

As Hillary Clinton prepared to announce her 2016 running mate, a trove of nearly 20,000 emails were released by WikiLeaks on Friday, providing an embarrassing inside look at Democratic Party operations on the eve of the Democrats' national convention.

The emails from the Democratic National Committee include discussions of Clinton's chief rival for the presidential nomination, Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.); details of perks provided to party donors attending the convention; and email exchanges between party officials, journalists and others.

The emails were released with an announcement by WikiLeaks on Twitter that linked readers to a WikiLeaks page inviting visitors to "Search the DNC email database." A search box sits underneath a one-paragraph introduction:

What Can I Do About Identity Theft and Fraud?

To victims of identity theft and fraud, the task of correcting incorrect information about their financial or personal status, and trying to restore their good names and reputations, may seem as daunting as trying to solve a puzzle in which some of the pieces are missing and other pieces no longer fit as they once did. Unfortunately, the damage that criminals do in stealing another person's identity and using it to commit fraud often takes far longer to undo than it took the criminal to commit the crimes.

Identity theft, and fraud caused by identity theft, is not something one can fix overnight. It's a major concern, and it can dramatically impact one's life, financial and otherwise.

We catch fraudulent applications quite a bit where I work, because we have a very robust and well-funded loss prevention division that screens our clients carefully and, if fraud is found, aggressively counters it. Just last week we had a fraudulent application, and when we contacted the "client" by the phone number reported in the credit bureau, it was discovered that there were 12 recent inquiries in the last six months on her credit. That damaged her credit score tremendously, and now she has a lot of work to do getting it corrected.

I rather doubt you'd be quite so flippant about it if it happened to you.

Out of all the investigated emails, only three contained potentially classified information.

Of those three, two were labelled incorrectly and were not actually classified at the time.

In as many of these emails as not, Hillary is merely CC'd and is neither the sender nor the exclusive recipient.

Some emails include verbiage that make it clear that there are technical problems and they are just trying to get email through on any channel they can due to schedule necesity.

The email server was set up before the rules about personal email servers were formally declared.

The FBI did not see any reason to charge her with any misconduct nor wrongdoing.

The Republicans know all this but continue to keep wasting money investigating this alllfer because they want scandal and the idea of impropriety with her to stay in the air and on the network news till the election.

All of that about her being CC'ed, not classified at the time, etc. is just fluff. Using a personal service rather than a dot gov was a bad decision, end of story. Lots of folks including me would have used the dot gov. The investigation is over. The FBI determined no charges were appropriate.

Continuing with these accusations after the investigation proves they are smear attempts. I always look at these smear tactics as diversionary efforts to put a negative light on the opposition. When you spend money to make your opposition look bad rather than bring your own good attributes and ideas to the public, you don't have much to say. That says a lot about your candidate. When you continue with these smears after an investigation by an entity like the FBI, that indicates you can't admit being wrong.

Can't admit being wrong and continues to sling mud, perfect characterizations of a loser.

WikiLeaks Emails Show DNC Favored Hillary Clinton Over Bernie Sanders During The Democratic Primary

Source: Huffington Post

snip-
One email from DNC Deputy Communications Director Eric Walker to several DNC staffers cites two news articles showing Sanders leading in Rhode Island and the limited number of polling locations in the state: “If she outperforms this polling, the Bernie camp will go nuts and allege misconduct. They’ll probably complain regardless, actually.”

…Instead of treating Sanders with impartiality, the DNC exhibits resentful disdain toward him and the thousands of disenfranchised voters he could have brought into the party.

“Wondering if there’s a good Bernie narrative for a story, which is that Bernie never ever had his act together, that his campaign was a mess,” wrote DNC Deputy Communications Director Mark Paustenbach to DNC Communications Director Luis Miranda, in response to backlash over DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz shutting off the Sanders campaign’s access to voter database files.

Another chain reveals MSNBC’s Chuck Todd and DNC staff members discussing how to discredit MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski’s call for Wasserman Schultz to resign.

Wikileaks hits DNC ahead of convention, competes with Kaine VP nomination

Source: CNBC

Political observers and media focused largely on a series of incriminating emails that revealed in various instances, DNC officials spoke disparagingly about both Sanders and his supporters.

Several other emails suggested the national organization, run by embattled Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, was trying to tilt the scales in favor of the former Secretary of State. Several communications showed DNC staffers collaborating with political journalists at key broadcast and print outlets to influence their coverage of both candidates.

snip-

In one message dated May 5, an exchange involving the DNC's finance chief asked a staffer to gather information on Sanders' religious beliefs, suggesting that it could influence the decision of southern voters. Sanders has alluded to his Jewish ancestry, but hasn't made much reference to religious beliefs during the campaign.

For his part, the Vermont senator remained largely silent about the affair. He made no remarks about the controversy on Twitter, where early Saturday he made an innocuous statement about the minimum wage.

DNC treatment of Sanders at issue in emails leaked to Wikileaks

Source: CNN

(CNN)Nearly 20,000 emails sent and received by Democratic National Committee staff members were released Friday by Wikileaks, and some messages are raising questions about the committee's impartiality during the Democratic primary.

One email appears to show DNC staffers asking how they can reference Sanders' faith to weaken him in the eyes of Southern voters. Another seems to depict an attorney advising the committee on how to defend Clinton against an accusation by the Sanders campaign of not living up to a joint fundraising agreement.

The revelation threatened to shatter the uneasy peace between the Clinton and Sanders camps and supporters days before the Democratic convention kicks off next week.

snip-
The emails were leaked from the accounts of seven DNC officials, Wikileaks said. CNN has not independently established the emails' authenticity.

And now proven to be real

Top DNC staffer apologizes for email on Sanders’ religion

A top staffer at the Democratic National Committee has apologized after suggesting that the organization use Bernie Sanders’ religious beliefs against him in the Democratic primary.

One email among the thousands of internal DNC messages released this week by Wikileaks showed DNC CFO Brad Marshall questioning Sanders’ Jewish faith, and suggested that painting the candidate as an atheist “could make several points difference” in several late primary contests.

(snip)

In a copy of a Facebook post provided by a source, Marshall said that he “deeply” regrets his “insensitive, emotional emails.” His Facebook page, upon searching, is private, and the statement is the only content viewable to the public.

The entire Facebook post: “I deeply regret that my insensitive, emotional emails would cause embarrassment to the DNC, the Chairwoman, and all of the staffers who worked hard to make the primary a fair and open process. The comments expressed do not reflect my beliefs nor do they reflect the beliefs of the DNC and its employees. I apologize to those I offended.”

Not unlike a marathon bike relay.

The DNC sponsored a competition and offered a significant grand prize to the winner. The contest operators claimed they wouldn't bias the outcome. To compete teams had to make investments of large amounts of things of value such as time and money.

And huuuge amounts of money and time were invested.

The DNC's governors should be deeply embarrassed and committed to reparation for the harm they caused

Sun Jul 24, 2016, 09:06 AM

She could use this news to help unify the party. If she refuses to act, it cuts the legitimacy of her primary win in the same way the disclosure of the Russian doping cuts the legitimacy of the gold medals at the Sochi Olympics.

It's a waste of time to undo the Primary result, just like it would be a waste of time to try and take the 2014 Olympic gold medals from the Russian athletes. We can hope that Clinton was ignorant of the cheating. But if Clinton, who benefited from the unethical practices of the DNC, sacks DWS, demands more transparency and oversight in order to keep the DNC from undermining democracy in the future, she will show leadership through good faith to the expanded party she now heads, shore up her trust issues, and help the next primary season be a true expression of the people's will.
