Terror attack kills scores in Nice, France, Hollande says

Last edited Fri Jul 15, 2016, 02:27 AM - Edit history (2)

Source: CNN

(CNN)Scores of people were killed Thursday night when a large truck plowed through a Bastille Day crowd in Nice, France, in what President Francois Hollande called a terror attack.

The death toll grew through the night, with Hollande saying 77 people died. Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said 80 people were killed.

The driver first shot a gun into the crowd before driving two kilometers along the Promenade des Anglais, the main street in Nice, mowing down people who had gathered to watch fireworks, regional President Christian Estrosi told CNN affiliate BFM-TV.

Police shot and killed the driver, said Pierre-Henry Brandet, a spokesman for the French Interior Ministry. Police found firearms, explosives and grenades in the truck, Estrosi said.

4. Police warn of an attack

The local police prefect of Alpes-Maritimes warned of an attack and asked Nice residents to stay indoors, France info radio reported.

“People are running, it’s panic,” a local newspaper journalist from Nice Matin was reported saying. “There is blood, no doubt injuries.”

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jul/14/several-killed-after-lorry-drives-into-crowd-in-nice-reports

Some reports spoke of shots being exchanged between police and the occupants of the lorry but these have not been confirmed.
...
Another image on Twitter showed a white lorry stopped in the middle of the promenade with damage to its front, and four police officers observing it while taking cover behind a palm tree.

A truck plowed into a group of pedestrians in Nice, France, Thursday night as people celebrated Bastille Day, authorities said.

"Dozens" of people may have been injured or even killed, according to the mayor.

The local Nice Martin newspaper reported that a car ran into a crowd watching a fireworks display. Photos and video on social media appeared to show crowds running from the scene, and people several injured on the ground.

Police told NBC they were aware of an incident but were still investigating.

Following the incident, Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi tweeted in french, "Dear nice, the driver of a truck appears to have made dozens of deaths. Stay for the moment to your home. More info to come."

The sub-prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes, Sébastien Humbert, told French rolling news channel BFM TV: “The death tolls is extremely high.”

He spoke of “maybe 30 dead in Nice” and 100 injured. He said a truck had ploughed into a crowd over a long distance on the beachfront Promenade des Anglais “which explains the extremely high toll”.

He added that there had been an exchange of gunfire and the truck driver had been killed. He described it as “a criminal event”. He told residents to avoid the centre of Nice.

On BBC TV, reporter at the office of the sub-prefecture says it's thought accomplices are still active.

101. You have to understand, I'm always right about these things, as evidenced in the report breaking

now.

French authorities have not yet released the name of the man killed by police after ploughing his truck through crowds for 2km along the famous Promenade des Anglais in Nice.

However an identity card was found in the cabin of the large white truck and the French media have reported that it belonged to a Franco-Tunisian man, aged 31, who was born in 1985.

He is believed to have been a resident in the city of Nice.

According to reports the man was known to police for violence and weapons offences, but was not on the radar of intelligence services for any terrorist or jihadist activities.

However authorities are trying to confirm whether the identity card found belonged to the kamikaze truck driver.

It is believed the driver hired the truck he used in the attack several days ago.

In his possession was a 7.65 calibre pistol, which he had used to fire on the crowd as he drove.

Initial reports that the truck was full of heavy weapons proved to be inaccurate as the weapons, including grenades later turned out to be fake.

Specialist anti-terrorist investigators are also trying to work out if he acted alone. Initial reports suggested he may had an accomplice who was seen running from the truck, but this has not been confirmed.

"News organizations in France and Tunisia identified the man believed to have committed the attack as Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, 31, a delivery-truck driver who was born on Jan. 3, 1985, and raised in Msaken, a town in northeastern Tunisia, and who moved to France around 2005. The police searched a home in Nice with Mr. Bouhlel’s name outside it.

According to two officials briefed on the investigation but who were not authorized to discuss it publicly, Mr. Bouhlel had a history of petty crime, including burglary and theft, but his name was not in a French database of people suspected of being radicalized militants."

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/16/world/europe/attack-nice-bastille-day.html

It wasn't a terrorist attack, per the definition on Dictionary.com. It was a mass murder.

But headlines get more attention and hits when it's called terrorism. 'if it bleeds, it leads'. What I'm seeing is irresponsible journalism.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10028013468#post39

Like I was saying. Just another wife beating loser with a grudge.

Like the crazy cops who keep shooting anyone who twitches with a tan.

Like the crazy guy who then shot the cops who keep shooting anyone with a tan.

Like the crazy guy who shot up a gay nightclub because he was tormented by his own confused sexuality.

Like the crazy guy who shot up a church because the object of his fantasies was dating a black man.

And on, and on, and on.

There's a difference between terrorism and acts of mass murder and spree killing. None of these actions were politically motivated or done just because someone was a muslim. Or had a tan. Terrorism is politically motivated by its very definition.

Other adjectives are available to journalists, perhaps they need a new thesaurus.

The common link is that they are all male. No one will have the guts to think that one through though.

I know exactly what this guy's motive was and so would you, if you can be bothered to read. But now you've gotten to the point where you just can't admit I'm correct. That's ok!

He wasn't ISIS. He wasn't a radical muslim. He was an enraged, rejected, self-loathing, drunken, wife beating male loser, just like the rest of them, in basic common aspects.

When that guy perpetrated THAT horrific massacre in San Bernadino, I said exactly the same thing about who he was and what his motives were. I was right about that too. (workplace grudge. You'll find my post about it in my history)

Some of us are more observant than others. Others just take a headline written by a wanna-be journalist and run with it.

This wasn't exactly 9/11 with multiple attackers buying plane tickets.
He rents a truck. Presses the accelerator. People die.
If he was radicalized online, that's all it takes to kill scores of people.

I have no answer. But Europe has a problem we do not have. We have an ocean between radical Islam and us. They can walk to Europe.

What worries me is the right conflating that problem with South American immigrants. Who are Christians after all. Not that it should matter.

Again, I have no answer. I am afraid that Europe will choose a repressive answer. But I am not there. I know watching the change in my European friends has been disquieting, but they are truly worried about the future of their free, open society.

I'm skeptical this had anything to do with Islam. There is another thread discussing an article that said the driver wasn't religious at all. He ate pork, drank, took drugs, and beat his wife. 20. At Least 60 Feared Dead And Shots Fired As Lorry RAMS Into Crowd

A lorry ran down a large group of people in the southern French city of Nice during a suspected terrorist attack. At least 50 people are feared dead with more than 100 injured during the Bastille Day attack.

Eyewitnesses have reported that hostages have been taken in two hotels and a restaurant in the city.

Gunshots rang out in the streets, with gunmen targeting hotels and cafes in the port city as residents were warned to lock themselves in doors for their safety. Hostages have been taken in a hotel in the city. The RAID anti-terror squad has been deployed to the city.

It is believed the gunmen are holding hostages in the Meridien Hotel, the Hotel Negresco and the Buffalo Grill restaurant.

A lorry rammed into a large group of people who were celebrating Bastille Day before gunmen started firing.

A spokesman for the Alpes Maritime prefecture advised locals to 'stay indoors' as gunfire was heard, and a lorry was driven into a crowd on the Promenade des Anglais.

BTW, did you know that there are descendants of the Moors still nurturing that particular humiliation.

It's really their only patrimony. "Look at us, we're special because we were especially victimized. It's unfair, all we did was colonize and victimize those in our imperial possessions for centuries, why should we have lost that war? No justice, no peace!"

Meh. "Historical justice" is just what we rely on when we want to justify our present hatred of currently living people.

Pretty much by definition, they'll lie to you - or sometimes they're just plain stupid. "They tried to accommodate' isn't true; they set about converting them, and got more and more violent about it. Unsurprisingly, 'americanthinker' paints the Muslims as being the bad guys.

133. He's right about 1609. Sort of

Until then baptism or exile were the two choices, but nobody much enforced it.

The problem wasn't the (secular) government; it was the Church. The *government* tried to accommodate Muslims; the Church authorities often in charge of implementing the provisions wanted forced conversions and to protect their own faith. Of course, that's a thin reed to rely on since the State wasn't all that separate from the Church.

Of course, more than a little of this could be rooted in "historical justice," since what the Catholic Church wanted was essentially what the Muslim authorities had decreed. No proselytization, keep your "bad" religion underground, our way or the highway. They wanted forced coversions, and often for the sake of survival in "Andalusia" you converted and kept your conversion secret upon pain of death or you suffered incredible oppression for generations. Revenge and avenging humiliation are bad things, but we still see that kind of atavistic thinking today.

Like, the same WalMart in France where you can roll up to the drive in window, but a bottle of whisky and a semi-automatic in the same purchase!

Not to mention, those guns are illegal in the entire country of France
Not "gun culture", Islamist culture

And acting like the "gun' had anything to do with the massive death toll is ludicrous.

152. And his guns are banned in all of France, so it matters little

Just like the guns of all the previous attackers in france.
Now they've found a way to kill a lot more than a gun would.
The EU better wake up before its too late. And it may already be.

Heartbreaking, people just watching fireworks on a promenade and this sorry excuse of a human being mows them down. My condolences to the people of France. May the victims rest in peace.

Plus they have a sizable population of disenchanted muslim immigrants that hasn't integrated into French society well. They also pissed off some fundamental muslims with their anti-burqa law.

106. Based on what they have currently, they say it appears only one person was involved. How do you

stop one person intent on killing as many people as possible?

This problem isn't just France.

One person killed a lot of people in Orlando. Two people killed a lot of folks in San Bernardino. Two people did the Boston Marathon bombing.

The one thing the perpetrators appear to have in common, is they subscribe to the radical Islamic movements that are behind groups like ISIL and AQ
