Turkey vows action against Syria for downing jet

Source: AP

By SUZAN FRASER, Associated Press – 7 minutes ago
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey will take retaliatory steps against Syria for the downing of a Turkish military jet, President Abdullah Gul said Saturday, even as he suggested that the aircraft may have unintentionally violated Syrian airspace.
It was not clear if Gul was suggesting military retaliation, increased sanctions against Syria or other possible steps, including demands for an apology, and his aide would not comment on his words. But Faruk Celik, Turkey's Labor and Social Security Minister, said Turkey would retaliate "either in the diplomatic field or give other types of response."
"Even if we assume that there was a violation of Syria's airspace — though the situation is still not clear — the Syrian response cannot be to bring down the plane," Celik told reporters.
"The incident is unacceptable," he said. "Turkey cannot endure it in silence."
Syria said Friday its forces had shot down a Turkish military plane that entered its air space. The plane, an unarmed F-4, went down in the Mediterranean Sea about 8 miles (13 kilometers) from the Syrian town of Latakia, Turkey said.

since the defector flew low to Jordan, and the Turkish plane was flying low and in Syrian airspace, they probably thought it was another defector - and they had orders to shoot.

How to explain to the Turks.

It is within Syria's rights under international law to maintain sovereignty over its airspace. Some people sitting in Istanbul want a new Ottoman Empire.

Turkey is calling on NATO to discuss a response to Syria’s downing of a Turkish jet in what Turkish leaders insist was international airspace

...
The plane wreckage was found Sunday in the Mediterranean at a depth of 3,281 feet (1,000 meters), Turkish state-run TRT television said. The pilots are unaccounted for.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the jet was on a training flight to test Turkey’s radar capabilities, not spying on Syria. He said the plane mistakenly strayed into Syrian airspace Friday, but was quickly warned to leave by Turkish authorities and was a mile inside international airspace when it was shot down off the coast of Latakia.

Syrian Air Defense Stands Firm against NATO Test

.......
According to the data available the brought down reconnaissance plane made two circles over the Syrian shore invading the country’s airspace. Flying that low it had the mission to test the Syrian air defenses and report the information to a respective NATO center. Having flown over Latakia, the invading aircraft tried to get away with impunity crossing the space over the Syrian territorial waters. A second Turkish plane operated in the vicinity coordinating the flight. As NATO sources report the mission was to test the Syrian air defenses combat readiness. NATO needs to know precisely if the Syrian shore based air defense units have an order to bring down without delay a foreign aircraft in case it violates the national airspace or the military would report to Damascus and lose time. They know the answer now: the Syrian air defense will react immediately without warning in case any air target invades the national airspace

......The efforts exerted by the West and its allies aimed at disintegration of its armed forces have been futile. Except separate cases of desertion, not a single unit of Syrian regular army has gone to the side of the terrorist gangs sent to the country from the territory of neighboring states including Turkey. For instance, last week The New York times reported CIA experts were present in the areas of Turkish territory bordering on Syria in order to coordinate the arms deliveries to the “Syrian Free Army”. On June 25 it was reported that Syrian border guards eliminated a group of terrorists trying to cross the border from Turkey.

The Syrian airspace is defended by Russia produced air defense systems. It’s a reliable guarantee of the country’s sovereignty.

.....Perhaps right now there is someone whom is strongly annoyed that the Libyan scenario cannot be repeated in Syria. But the picture has become clear. Sacrificing the Turkish plane NATO received an answer: if you don’t want to lose pilots and weapons anymore – leave the Syrians alone.

imho
when the right defectors cross over, a virus will hit the air defense system...
If not already
