40 people killed by Al-Nusra shelling in Aleppo – Russian military

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by LostOne4Ever (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

The terrorist group Al Nusra Front has killed over 40 people in massive artillery shelling of the Syrian city of Aleppo, the Russian military reported.

The Al-Qaeda branch used rocket artillery, mortars and anti-aircraft cannons to attack several neighborhoods of the war-torn city, the Russian military mission in Syria reported on Saturday.

The attack devastated a police station and seriously damaged several residential buildings, the report said. Over 40 civilians, security officers and military troops were killed by the shelling while some 100 were injured.

1. Propaganda report from Assad-apologist Russia Today website

It's funny how people here have no trouble seeing through US propaganda outlets, but seem to buy into the Russian propaganda outlets.

Very much pro-Israeli government version of events.

25. Reporting events is not propaganda. And that will stop when the terrorist acts stop.

I'm surprised at no outrage over a terrorist attack only that people on this board resent postings of the act.

If there were less terrorist actions, we would have less events posted.

27. It is if you lie

And claim the attack was conducted by rebels when it was actually conducted by government forces.

8. Al Jazeera says they were killed by a Syrian government airstrike

Syrian government air strikes have killed dozens of civilians in and around the northern city of Aleppo, volunteer rescuers have said.

11. Thanks!

The part about the story - from which ever source that I found distressing, was that the Syrian army and rebel groups whose common goal is getting rid of ISIS, are running away again. Who killed who is sadly becoming background noise - a tragic cost of a civil war that has gotten so out of hand.

all the unsubstantiated crap comes not from reporters or real human rights orgs, but from a guy who makes claims from his apartment.

Certainly if you can recognize that, you can also be similarly skeptical of reports from the Russian military sources cited in the OP.

19. Could be entirely different incident.

Anti-government forces could have targeted the government-held Midan neighborhood: https://twitter.com/edwardedark/status/739039182111289344

And the government or pro-government forces could have targeted neighborhoods held by the anti-government forces.

Also, in recent days, this report stated that YPG claims anti-government forces were attacking a YPG-held neighborhood in Aleppo.

I believe that there's plenty of video documentation of the aftermath of attacks against government-held neighborhoods of Aleppo by anti-government forces. I also think it's true that the Russian media outlets distribute disinformation.

According to that twitter feed, none of the attacks on Aleppo have been by Syrian government forces, as the Al Jazeera article indicates.

23. I understand.

I don't necessarily accept information from any single source. I think I generally understand the editorial standpoint of the different distributors of information on the conflict. I do think, based on the video and other reports I've seen, that the anti-government forces have targeted government-held neighborhoods. I also think that the government has targeted neighborhoods held by anti-government forces. The various parties generally focus on those things that validate their existing narrative.

I recommend this site as a source of data on the conflict: https://www.reddit.com/r/syriancivilwar.

6. It's kind of sad when we distrust our own domestic media so much we have to turn to foreign run

sources just for access to certain info and to get a balanced view.

If this happened, if they are reporting the truth, what's the problem with it really other. Sure the source is biased but all sources are biased in different ways.

10. Russia Today is a propaganda site

They protect the Russian version of events, along with their ally Assad.

Every attack is blamed on "rebels" - even (and especially) when other media sources ascribe responsibility to the Syrian government forces, as is the case here.

24. "Watching bd guys..." < "CIA begins weapons delivery to Syrian rebels" Not just watching.

The CIA has begun delivering weapons to rebels in Syria, ending months of delay in lethal aid that had been promised by the Obama administration, according to U.S. officials and Syrian figures. The shipments began streaming into the country over the past two weeks, along with separate deliveries by the State Department of vehicles and other gear — a flow of material that marks a major escalation of the U.S. role in Syria’s civil war.

The arms shipments, which are limited to light weapons and other munitions that can be tracked, began arriving in Syria at a moment of heightened tensions over threats by President Obama to order missile strikes to punish the regime of Bashar al-Assad for his alleged use of chemical weapons in a deadly attack near Damascus last month.

The arms are being delivered as the United States is also shipping new types of nonlethal gear to rebels. That aid includes vehicles, sophisticated communications equipment and advanced combat medical kits.

17. "Syrian Observatory for Human Rights" is convenient to producing war narratives

there is no incident that they don't claim to be a syrian gov. or Russian atrocity.

If you want to really learn what is going in in *any* military / war action you are going to have to sift through war narratives and propaganda.

I think this is a good source: https://www.reddit.com/r/syriancivilwar

28. Here's a secret to some:

Sometimes there is no "good guy" in war, despite the human mind's desperate attempt to pick a side. Sometimes something is just a gigantic clusterfuck, and all sides bring their version of chaos, despair, and destruction to the table.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions. The U.S., Russia, and ISIS all believe themselves to be the "good guys." Ask a mother whose child was just obliterated into a fine red pulp if she thinks the man who fired the shell was one of the "good guys." It's irrelevant which side fired the shell - the result is the same.
