Global slavery index says 45.8 million people in servitude

Source: Washington Post

LONDON — About 45.8 million people around the world are trapped in modern slavery, a charity said Tuesday — almost a third more than it estimated two years ago.

The Walk Free Foundation’s Global Slavery Index said that India has by far the largest number of modern slaves, 18.35 million, followed by China with 3.39 million and Pakistan with 2.13 million.

North Korea was found to have the highest per capita rate of modern slavery, with 4.37 percent of its population affected.

I'm not sure you're doing things right. At the very least, you should be pissed at the college that gave you an expensive degree that's only good for getting minimum wage jobs.

I agree. People seem to not want to discuss or do anything about this. If it wasn't for Russell Crowe it might not even have gotten the coverage that it did. Note that the article was in the "Celebrity" section of the Washington Post.

reports, or even discussed much in alternative and more left news sources. People don't seem to care, and don't want to know or believe it if it's brought up. I only learned about this broad phenomenon in the US a couple years ago namely from brief news pieces like one I saw about the governors of VA and MD forming a joint task force.
An article posted here, or a report on Free Speech TV covered how this scourge is global and escalating. For example, because of the growing demand for Asian females in the last 10 years especially for a large sports event like the World Cup, young girls are trafficked from Asia, then from eastern Europe into Germany to service men by their 'employers' at a rate of up to 100 per day, to 'keep up with the competition'- greed and unregulated capitalism at work. And law enforcement authorities do nothing about it, just shocking.

At a student rally for Bernie held in No. Va. at GMU several months ago, a passionate young woman college student brought up how there is a slave only a mile away from every one of us all across America.
Comedian Lee Camp of 'Redacted Tonight' mentioned on his show how incredible it is that a finance debt collector tracked him down after 15 years about payment for a college course he took, but we somehow we can't seem to 'find and prosecute' human slavery in this country.
Good for actor Russell Crow and shame on the Post for placing this important report in the 'Celebrity' section.

12. I'd include a lot of "brides" in this who functionally are owned/slaves by any other name

Particularly the ones who start out as child brides--no choice in the matter, then made pregnant in one's teens, with a husband who has the right to rape/beat you at will. That'a a good 15% of 'marriages' in fundamentalist societies, and I'm lowballing.
