HORSE CAVE, Ky. (AP) Two tour groups exploring a Kentucky cave were trapped Thursday by rising water, leaving 19 people missing including two police officers who tried to reach them, authorities said.
The tourists and officers were trapped in Hidden River Cave in south-central Kentucky.
Rescue teams, including members of a dive squad, had reached the cave but had not yet ventured inside, Horse Cave Fire Chief Donnie Parker said. He said the tour groups had been inside for several hours and authorities weren't sure where they were in the cave.
. . .
Parker said two local police officers who tried to rescue the tourists were among those still inside. He said four people were able to escape but didn't have details about how they got out.

HORSE CAVE, Ky. (AP) A group of college students trapped for hours by rising water in a Kentucky cave waded through neck-deep water to get out, authorities said Thursday.
The 19 people trapped included two police officers who tried to reach them, Hart County Emergency Management Director Kerry McDaniel said. The students from Clemson University in South Carolina were exploring the cave when torrential rains hit the region, he said.
The students went into Hidden River Cave about 10 a.m. CDT Thursday and emerged about 4:30 p.m., McDaniel said. They walked out on their own and were checked for hypothermia but declined further medical attention, he said.
"When they came out of the cave, they were neck-deep in water," he said.

(58,785 posts)that the officers were among those who got out, rather than just among those trapped, but presumably that's just bad writing.
I'm glad I didn't see this until the good news was posted, because it gave me a real little clutch. I was lost in a cave in Mexico for about a minute when a guide's light went out. I'd strolled away to examine another area leading farther back, but I realized I couldn't tell just where his voice was coming from as he tried to figure out what was wrong with his light, and it was too real for that minute. Couldn't see your hand in front of your eyes, so certainly couldn't see the holes in the floor opening to the underground river. End of strolling away.

(17,537 posts)It sounds like they had the right gear (headlamps), stayed together, and kept their wits about them.
Reccing this as a reminder to people to be very careful when exploring caves.

(21,801 posts)Holy Crap! Major storms here this afternoon. We pass this place in Horse Cave going to pick up hay. There's usually a few people lined up to do the zip line. Its right in town, never realized it was this big. We'll have to check it out.
There's caves all over the place here, major rock outcroppings even on our place. Of course, Mammoth Cave is the big tourist attraction.
