Peanut Death Restaurateur Jailed For Six Years
Source: Sky News
The owner of a curry house where a customer died eating food containing peanuts has been setenced to six years in jail for causing the man's death.
Mohammed Zaman was found guilty of manslaughter by gross negligence when a customer with a severe peanut allergy died after eating a takeaway - even though the diner had insisted his meal must be nut-free.
Paul Wilson suffered a severe anaphylactic shock after ordering the meal from the Indian Garden restaurant in North Yorkshire.
Teesside Crown Court was told that Zaman "put profit before safety" by failing to warn customers with allergies that he was using peanut ingredients.

(45,427 posts)I have a relative with a severe nut allergy so I have to always ask about nut oils, nuts as garnishes, nut butters, etc. if ordering something she might eat.

(3,384 posts)It literally is called "Wow Butter" in smooth or chunky. It can be found in Von's or Safeway, too.
It took me decades of odd skin rashes to find out that not only am I allergic to peanuts which hits me so fast it is obvious, but other things that your relative should avoid:
Sesame: oil, seeds in bread and on hamburger buns and Humus.
All tree nuts of course
Avoid chocolate except Hershey's Kisses and syrup. Dove chocolates and Nestle are out (!) with many others.
Breads - I can only eat sourdough or whole wheat or rye - that is it.
Crackers - I'm down to only Triscuits and the uninteresting Premium Brand Saltines..
Oils: Eliminate ALL but Olive, Soybean and Corn. No Canola Oil ( rapeseed) nor Safflower Oil.
No flax seed or flax oil either.
The last things I've eliminated due to not realizing the ingredients were Humus, flax, Canola Oil.
Canola oil is everywhere, especially in tortilla chips and bottled salad dressings.
Read all ingredients closely. Go through a process of emilination once one's skin clears up, then introduce one thing that you question at a time.
I'm still not quite sure about carnuba wax that is in many candies like jellybeans, so I take it easy on them.
My wife who I met in 2002 has never seen my arms and legs so clear now.
Good luck.

(4,516 posts)that does not include peanuts since they aren't actually nuts but peas. I can however sympathize with those with a peanut allergy. I to, have been served food containing nuts, after I have carefully considered the menu, make what I believe to be a safe choice and informing the waiter.
Some one needs to develop a sort of "test strip" that we can dip in our food before eating, to be certain it won't kill us.

(26,324 posts)Can a reaction be so severe the epi pen doesn't work?
Shit, I would like to have one around "just in case" and we don't have any allergies here.
My neighbor has an allergy to cumin. Every once in a while, she gets an unplanned reaction. I ask her if she has an epi pen and she says she "should probably get one" . wtf? She takes benadryl. I know she has gone to the Er at least once.
The restaurant owner in the op deserves the sentence, I guess. It was pretty egregious. But I just can't see putting my life in the hands of some line cook getting paid minimum wage. Half the stuff we order is fucked up one way or the other. My partner has a few quirks about some foods and delivery orders are constantly messed up.
A friend of a friend died last year from a bee sting. He didn't know he was allergic, I think. He lived in a far west Chicago suburb in a kind of rural area. By the time EMS got to him it was too late.
Yeah, a test strip would be a great idea.

(4,516 posts)Due to the nature of my allergy, it happens that my first knowledge of nuts in something I am eating begins with my lips. Then my mouth. Its like a bite of something waaay tooo hot. There have been many times I noticed before I swallowed. Those times did not require an epi shot, if I had swallowed I would have injected it on the way to the ER.
The last incident occurred Christmas 2014. My husband ate a piece of pecan pie and sipped his coffee. Cups got mixed up and I drank from his. Before the 2nd sip I knew something was wrong. No epi needed.
