(CNN)A Texas deputy constable talking to his partner was shot multiple times in the back -- for no obvious reason.
Harris County Deputy Constable Alden Clopton and his partner, a reserve deputy, were making a traffic stop late Wednesday night, authorities said.
After the driver was free to go, the reserve deputy was talking to her partner Clopton, "who was standing and talking to her through her open passenger window," Houston police spokesman Kese Smith said.
"She hears multiple gunshots and sees that her partner had been struck."

Texas Officer Expected To Recover From Shooting
HOUSTON (AP) -- The Latest on the shooting of a Houston deputy constable (all times local):
4:30 p.m.
The trauma surgeon who treated a Houston deputy constable for multiple gunshot wounds says the deputy remains in critical condition, is recovering "fairly routinely" and should make a full recovery.
Dr. Joseph Love says the deputy, Alden Clopton, has six wounds to his abdomen and chest areas but is doing "quite well." Love says although Clopton is in intensive care, he expects the father of five should not require any additional surgery.
Love also says he anticipates Clopton will be in the hospital for a week or so.
He's uncertain how many times Clopton was shot late Wednesday night outside a convenience store after completing a traffic stop but had "six areas of injury." He said some bullets were not removed because doing so could cause additional injury and leaving them in should pose no problem for Clopton.

How many more of these insane acts must our country suffer until people start seriously considering gun control?

(1,965 posts)If it had been even easier to get guns, the chances are higher that a "good guy" with a gun would've been on scene to prevent this.

How about the entire U.S.?
Ban HANDGUNS now !!
I have no problem with someone owning bolt action hunting / target rifles.

(10,279 posts)shot fails to hit the target, operating a bolt action gives the target sufficient time to escape. The only way to put meat on the table is to hunt with an assault rifle.

A sorry state of affairs on DU.
My prayers are for the Officer, and his complete recovery.

(16,063 posts)I'm sorry he got shot, but I'd feel the same for anyone who was ambushed...cop, soldier, person on the street!
It's clear that he will survive, and he's getting good medical care!
And as far as being shot in the back, I'm thinking he was likely shot from the side! And none of them were fatal...which is good!

(37,748 posts)My opinion is that applies to you as well. For my part, I'd rather see honest indifference than a disingenuous sincerity.
Although, I can readily empathize with doing so-- it allows us to feel very validated by mere words lacking any substantive or relevant action.
A sorry state, indeed...
