Bernie Sanders to Talk About the ‘Idolatry of Money’ at Vatican

Source: Time

“You can’t have a moral economy when so many people are living in poverty.”

by Tessa Berenson , TIME APRIL 8, 2016, 3:08 PM EDT

Bernie Sanders will speak about the “idolatry of money” during his trip to the Vatican next week, he says.

The Vermont senator revealed his plans in an interview with the Guardian, while also praising Pope Francis for supporting economic justice.

“What the Pope has been clear about is linking the issue of morality with the global economy and making the point that you can’t have a moral economy when so many people are living in poverty,” Sanders told the paper. “He has raised the issue more than any other person on the planet and I am very proud to be with him in the Vatican.”

Sanders will be in the Vatican for a conference on April 15. It has not yet been determined whether he will have a private meeting with Pope Francis.

This new religion demands absolute Blind Faith Devotion to an invisible Deity for which
no concrete evidence exists.
In fact, all real world evidence contradicts the existence of this new deity, yet our leadership uses this deity to justify Economic Policy that negatively affects Billions of people,
but enhances the fortunes of the privileged handful who sit on the gilded thrones of the 1%.

The Sanders campaign made the announcement on Friday as the Vermont senator made the rounds on the morning television news shows. Mr. Sanders, a Democratic presidential candidate, said he would take a break from campaigning in New York, just days before the April 19 primary there, to attend a conference hosted by the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, a scholarly association in Vatican City that was established by Pope John Paul II in 1994.

Mr. Sanders did not initially correct interviewers who suggested that he would meet with the pope, but he later clarified that he had not confirmed whether the two men would actually meet.

Further confusion about the trip bubbled up on Friday afternoon when the Vatican press office made clear that it had not issued the invitation, but that it had come from the academy. It said that there was no indication that Mr. Sanders would meet with Francis.

Meanwhile, Margaret Archer, the academy’s president, told Bloomberg News that Mr. Sanders had actively solicited the invitation for political purposes.

“Sanders made the first move, for the obvious reasons,” Ms. Archer said. “I think in a sense he may be going for the Catholic vote, but this is not the Catholic vote, and he should remember that and act accordingly — not that he will.”

But hours later, Monsignor Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, a senior papal official and the academy’s chancellor, denied that Mr. Sanders had invited himself to the event. He told Reuters that it was his idea to invite the senator.

http://www.nytimes.com/politics/first-draft/2016/04/08/bernie-sanders-accepts-pope-franciss-invitation-to-travel-to-the-vatican/

And it appears Sanders will not be meeting with Pope Francis, who will be in Greece April 14-15.

The actual bylaws of the Academy state:

http://www.pass.va/content/scienzesociali/en/about/statutes.html

The President is nominated by the Supreme Pontiff, to whom he reports directly. The President remains in office for five years and his mandate may be renewed. He is directly assisted by the Chancellor, who is nominated by the Supreme Pontiff.

So the President (Archer) is nominated by the Supreme Pontiff, to whom she reports directly. The President remains in office for five years and her mandate may be renewed. She is directly assisted by the Chancellor (that is Sorondo, who issued the invitation to Sanders). Assistants assist their superiors.

Been invited by the Vatican, in the middle of the election, to speak on anything?

And that is the point. For the Vatican, who does nothing of the sort like this without the approval of the Pope, is absolutely amazing.

I hope, with such, Bernie is allowed to speak on the camera with The Pope about this subject - for everyone to see.

This is a very impressive invite for Bernie, indeed on a subject he knows plenty about.

a subject from what I have read is as important to him as poverty.

He seems to be someone willing to out on a limb as is Francis. I think both understand that the world is in a very precarious state and have taken this bold step. Of course there will be official denials that the Pope knew about the invite.

people with the big H in their posts.

There was no invitation and even if there was Bernie asked for it himself. There are even serious doubts about whether there is even a Pope and if there is if he probably isn't Catholic!

From what I have gathered all the video of the event will be filmed in the desert outside of Las Vegas. It'll be a lot easier this time, they won't have to fake the low gravity.

Must suck to be Hillary, why Bernie isn't even Christian. How dare the Pope invite that commoner but not invite the future Que... err, future President of the United States.

I would love to be in the room when she finds out she lost the primary in New York.
