Alabama Lawmakers Move Forward With Plan to Impeach Gov. Robert Bentley (updated)

Last edited Tue Apr 5, 2016, 06:23 PM - Edit history (3)

Source: NBC News

Alabama lawmakers moved Tuesday to impeach their governor nearly two weeks after his squeaky clean reputation was wrecked by allegations that he and a top aide had an adulterous affair.

"We're looking at this governor who has essentially betrayed the trust of the people of Alabama," State Rep. Ed Henry said. "This is about the actions and lies that have caused us some doubts about his leadership."

Alabama Governor Robert Bentley speaks with former aide Rebekah Mason. NBC News
Henry then called on Gov. Robert Bentley to resign.

"If he truly loves the people of this state, he will step down," Henry said.

By a Democrat? A Republican? A back-bencher? Or a real power broker in the legislature?

In Alabama and other southern states nothing happens or gets done until it is first validated by Republicans.

Any fool can introduce articles of impeachment any time they want to. Will they get a committee hearing?

Gawd must have had a change of heart.

Since that old horn-dog governor doesn't have enough personal honor and remorse to resign, let an impeachment seal his fate. And damned quickly.

I don't think this kind of stuff should matter in politics. Only the ability to do their job.

But I also want him to lose his job because he's a conservative governor.

And for some reason, Republicans do too, when the guilty party is a devout Republican who stands up and apologizes and asks for forgiveness.

But he won't admit it and he isn't apologizing and asking for forgiveness, is he? Except for maybe inappropriate thoughts?

This excerpt from the story:

Bentley, a 73-year-old sometime Sunday School teacher, and Mason, a married mom, have denied having a physical affair. But steamy excerpts from a purported telephone conversation between them have cast doubts on those claims.

Bentley and Mason were outed by the former head of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency who said he was fired because he refused to cover up the alleged affair.

The man who was fired said the order came directly from the governor.

If this is true, Bentley needs to GO.

That is taxpayers' money in the trough those hogs are eating at.

I know a way to get even!

Gov. Bentley should just expand Medicaid (the Republican legislature is poised to override his budget veto for shorting Medicaid $85,000,000!), come out for constitutionally-approved casino-style slot machines where already voted in (but shutdown by Republican attorney generals), go whole-hog for a state lottery amendment - and finally - switch parties and become a Democrat!

Democrats aren't pious, judgmental assholes - are we?

Seriously. Republicans are busted every day for doing hypocritical stuff. It's all they ever do. So why should I care about this particular hypocrite at this particular time? Who cares?

And generally when a sitting US Governor is impeached it's a big deal no matter what party they represent. But mainly Don Siegelman, at least for me.

He's betrayed the trust of the people of Wisconsin more times than I can count. If betraying the trust of the people was a crime worth of impeachment a vast majority of elected Republicans would be in trouble.
