Stanford University report finds fracking CAN pollute underground drinking water, conflicting with previous studies

April 01, 2016 at 1:49 PM

A newly released study of fracking in a small Wyoming town has found that common practices in the industry may have widespread impacts on drinking water – a conclusion in direct conflict to U.S. EPA and Yale University reports last year that no such evidence exists.

The latest study was conducted by scientists at Stanford University based on findings from hydraulic fracturing operations in Pavillion, Wyoming, population 231.

The findings were reached based on public records and were published in the latest edition of Environmental Science & Technology.

The Stanford study found a direct link between fracking operations near the town and underground sources of drinking water. The research cited such unsafe practices as the dumping of drilling and production fluids containing diesel fuel, high chemical concentrations in unlined pits, and a lack of adequate cement barriers to protect groundwater.

Who could have predicted that injecting poisonous chemicals into the ground would affect drinking water?

"Further regulation and knowing what chemicals are used" will not prevent this contamination of our drinking water. It's time for Hillary to get real on fracking. The look on the young girls face who asked her about fracking earlier, was awful, sad. Hillary sold fracking around the world while at the state dept. She has contributed to the decline of our water sources.

Tell me, what is so exciting about Hillary and her record? There is zero enthusiasm for her, or any future administration. To think that far ahead is downright scary, with all the money coming into her campaign.

Hillary Clinton’s campaign has been backed by the fossil fuel industry in a number of ways.

First, there are the direct contributions from people working for fossil fuel companies to Clinton’s campaign committee. According to the most recent filings, the committee has received $309,107 (as of March 21, 2016; source: Center for Responsive Politics) from such donors.

Next are the fossil fuel lobbyists, many of whom have also bundled contributions. These donations also flow to Clinton’s campaign committee. Greenpeace has tracked $1,465,610 in bundled and direct donations from lobbyists currently registered as lobbying for the fossil fuel industry. This number excludes donations from lobbyists who are employed directly by a fossil fuel companies, as those donations would have been included in the previous number.

Last are contributions from fossil fuel interests to Super PACs supporting Hillary Clinton. Greenpeace has found $3,250,000 in donations from large donors connected to the fossil fuel industry to Priorities Action USA, a Super PAC supporting Secretary Clinton’s campaign.
All told, the campaign to elect Hillary Clinton for president in 2016 has received more than $4.5 million from lobbyists, bundlers, and large donors connected the fossil fuel industry.

10. Obama Supports Fracking to Create 600,000 Jobs, Vows Safe Drilling for Gas
Fri Apr 1, 2016, 05:10 PM

President Barack Obama pushed drilling for gas in shale rock and support for cleaner energy sources to boost the economy in his final State of the Union address before facing U.S. voters in November.

Hydraulic fracturing, the process of injecting water, sand and chemicals underground to free gas trapped in rock, could create more than 600,000 jobs by the end of the decade, Obama said yesterday. The process, called fracking, is among a list of energy policies Obama said would fuel economic growth.

“We have a supply of natural gas that can last America nearly 100 years, and my administration will take every possible action to safely develop this energy,” Obama said.

Obama Backs Fracking During Campaign Appearance
President Obama says Americans “should welcome” the shale drilling boom that has lead to increased domestic oil and gas production, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The Democrat’s caveat – he supports drilling as long as it’s done “safely and in a way that’s environmentally sound.”

Previous research showed it hadn't, not that it couldn't.

For many, there's no difference. Any confirmation is pure confirmation.

Even this OP has the researchers saying that the injection of liquids into the strata for fracking can contaminate aquifers, but the summary of their research says that it's unconfined aquifers that were contaminated by infiltration from surface storage.

No matter. Just as "hasn't" = "can't", so surface-water infiltration of unconfined aquifers = intentional contamination of confined aquifers.

It goes to the general level of science education in the US. Sure, we here "get" evolution, but that bit of insight won't let you map tectonic plates given earthquake data or solve the probability equation for a H atom, much less something like, oh, silicon.
