Trump Says Abortion Ban Should Carry Punishment for Women
Source: Bloomberg
March 30, 2016 2:50 PM EDT
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said Wednesday there would have to be some form of punishment for women who have abortions if the procedure were outlawed in the U.S.
The comment, which is sure to rile abortion-rights supporters, came during a week where Trump is fighting to defend himself on womens issues on multiple fronts ahead of a key primary in Wisconsin.
At a taping of an MSNBC town hall to be aired later, host Chris Matthews pressed Trump on his anti-abortion position, repeatedly asking him, Should abortion be punished? This is not something you can dodge.
Look, people in certain parts of the Republican Party, conservative Republicans, would say, Yes, it should, Trump answered.

(2,560 posts)10 to 1 he is jacking with them completely. He is messing with their heads. Gosh it has been fun to watch.
If he deliberately went in to stir the chit over there, all while getting limitless exposure and branding and attention ....
The part of me that hates Repugs would secretly be applauding him for exposing their underbelly.
I actually liked him well enough on the Apprentice, watched the first two seasons....
Seemed to be a cocky blowhard but with some empathy occasionally, I'd find myself thinking the blowhard thing was fake bravado to an extent.
Just last night on the townhall he said that education and health care were Americans biggest problems...just blurted out of him.....after claiming security as the top three. My point is if you listen carefully, he blurts a Dem view out here and there and quickly moves on.... Either he drops the act for a minute, or just seeing if he can get away with it.
I haven't heard the other pubs say boo about education for example.
Also, at the beginning of his campaign, he was spouting numerous Dem talking points on issues, including abortion. This was in September.... And I actually was amazed how they cheered at what he was saying... I remember thinking these fools aren't even listening to him. As the months went on and he was made to answer directly...he did a 180 on almost every issue.
My final take is that this is all 100% show, he's a master manipulator and salesman, and quite frankly it's got him far, and we all talk and talk and talk about him. I think it's mission accomplished for him. My gut tells me he's privately laughing his ass off at the Repubs.
He will never admit it if his main intent was to jack with the Repubs. But I do think about how funny it would be if at the end of it all he's on stage with Hillary if she wins, celebrating her inauguration. a big f u to the repub party....
Doubt that would happen but it has crossed my mind.
I have no concerns about him being President, because I don't think there's a chance in hell of it happening. I don't even think he'll get the nom. Of course I could be wrong.

(2,565 posts)The stories are all 100% eerily similar.
They say he is ABSOLUTELY nothing like this in person and holds none of these views or if he did, he kept them completely hidden.
Then, of course, Reagan was a liberal democrat and the head of SAG at one point... so I am sure people who knew him way back when, didn't recognize the person he become.

(2,560 posts)It's been my take since early on in his campaign, I did waiver though for a couple days when I saw his rally's on TV, with him standing up there for a half hour saying "get her outta here", and calling for the losers to go. Watching it my blood ran cold, and I questioned my previous assessment. After thinking about it for a few days, it seemed it's part of the act, he's ramping up the craziness to get more votes from the types of people that get off on feeling so superior to others, plus how easy it was for him to just stand there acting like King Ass for half the time instead of speaking about, well....anything. Came around to thinking, it's just more show....
I have to add that although it gives me great pleasure to watch the Repubs blow up upon themselves, I am disgusted at the precedent this has set...who's next Kayne West for 2020?
And I'm beyond embarrassed at how other countries are perceiving this absolute farce and mockery of our political process.
I also believe we have talk radio to thank for how we got here.

(15,532 posts)I firmly believe he has no interest in actually being President but is just enjoying all this attention (thanks to the ridiculous media in this country) he's getting. It's a dangerous combination.
There was a time when many of us thought a pro wrestler could never be elected governor but then it happened. Or a TV actor with a clearly foreign accent be elected governor of California, but that happened also. Do not underestimate the ignorance of the populace in this country or the addiction to entertainment.

(3,384 posts)your 'Letters To The Editor' that you have submitted that have been published as these would show voters your positions on the issues that we all face. Examples of your leadership in the community and the results gained is another way to show your committment to public service. It's a long road to create real change in a way that has staying power. Are you really up for that? Campaign donations for nothing is not going to happen, you understand that, right? Either way, best of luck, do your best.

(15,023 posts)If you're unfamiliar with it, a film crew attended an anti-abortion rally some 8 years ago for the purpose of asking the demonstrators if, in the event abortion is again made illegal, what punishment would be appropriate for a woman who still chose to have one. The responses are eye opening, largely for illuminating that these people had never considered that aspect and were quite uncomfortable when confronted with it.
Well worth the viewing.

(10,500 posts)but there is a major effort to restrict, and eventually eliminate, abortion rights.
If we win this election then we will secure the Supreme Court for 20 years. But if we lose then the Republicans could establish a right-wing majority on the court for generations to come.
A court filled with Scalias will almost certainly criminalize abortion.

(61,690 posts)But Republicans are doing a damn good job of making it extremely difficult to get. The new laws on 24 hour waits, unnecessary ultrasounds, widening clinic hallways, meeting outpatient surgical suite standards, admitting privileges, etc have caused many clinics to close.
I guess getting an abortion in a clinic with a normal width hallway should put the woman away for years if Trump has his way.

(12,655 posts)through measures such as you mentioned. but unfortunately, even a guarantee of roe into perpetuity will not be able to change state behavior. that is a state by state fight. the good part of that is despite his bluster, trump is not really going to be able to do anything on this issue at the federal level.

Trump can then promote any product or idea and these dipshit idiots will go bonkers supporting them. (95,337 posts)Since clearly the man also did absolutely nothing to help protect for an unwanted pregnancy then the man should also get equal punishment.
Getting pregnant takes TWO people so if the woman has an abortion and is punished then why shouldn't the man involved receive equal or even harsher punishment.
:eyesroll:
Clearly if men were capable of getting pregnant we'd have abortion clinics on every street corner like a fricking Starbucks.

I also try at times, in the nicest possible way with sincere curiosity, to ask people to elaborate on what Obama has done that is left wing, or what Hilary has suggested that is socialist. Wordless sputtering is usually the response. I usually drop it at that point. At best maybe they will think the next time they hear how Hilary is a socialist, at the very least they will stop saying it in front of me. I successfully got one friend to stop about WMD in Iraq and how they just had to be there even though we didn't find any, and I got the same friend to stop trashing Al Gore on right wing talking points.

(10,857 posts)... Which demographically breaks down the election, and here is my conclusion:
Donald Trump and the other GOP clowns have already deeply offended about 70% of all voters, leaving only non-college educated white males as a reliable Republican demographic.
All women, plus all minorities, plus me means that no Republican is ever going to (fairly) win a Presidential election ever again. It really is over for the Republican Party, and they are already beginning their total conversion into a terrorist group and crime organization rather than a political front for those operations.
It's a bright future, and a very dark one, at the same time.
