U.S. captures ISIS operative, ushering in tricky phase

Source: Tampa Bay Times

WASHINGTON An elite U.S. Special Operations force has captured a significant Islamic State operative in Iraq and is expected to apprehend and interrogate a number of others in the coming months, ushering in a new and potentially fraught phase in the fight against the extremist Sunni militant group.

U.S. defense officials described the capture as a crucial development in battling the Islamic State but said it also raised questions about handling what is likely to be a growing group of detainees.

Although U.S. commandos have captured a handful of Islamic State fighters in Iraq and Syria in recent years, the Pentagon is faced with the prospect of detaining a larger group of captives and potentially reprising some of the darkest images of the war in Iraq, particularly the abuses at Abu Ghraib prison.

The U.S. military has largely fought the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, from the sky, and large numbers of Islamic State fighters have been killed in Iraq and Syria by U.S. airstrikes. The 200-member Special Operations team, made up mostly of Delta Force commandos, arrived in Iraq in recent weeks and is the first major U.S. force on the ground there since the United States pulled out of the country at the end of 2011.

1. Hopefully these POWs will be treated humanely

And I suspect they will be.

2. Interestingly

I expect this phase to become a stick in the president's eye regarding gitmo. There are some high ranking individuals who are total tools of the mic and are purposefully working against the Commander in Chief to defeat his withdrawal from the ME theater.

6. I agree.

Those hawks in the Pentagon have not carried out their constitutional duty to serve the duly elected Commander in Chief.

4. Although I have my doubts about this ISIS* war but you have to give the people behind .....

.... this operation credit for getting the job done and being quite and professional too.

* ISIS is the direct result of w & Cheney's unneeded war in Iraq.

5. "Tricky Phase!?"

I want my country back!
George Washington threatened to execute any of his soldiers who mistreated British prisoners of war.
We hung Japanese generals for waterboarding prisoners.
Bush took our country back to the dark age of torture.
Our nation under Drumpf would make torture a pay for view sport.

7. We are diminished in world

standing when we critique other nations for human rights abuses then commit torture. It is morally repugnant to even consider. Shame on those who allowed it to happen. They will be remembered for their lack of values and a sham scheme that yielded no significant information.
