‘Affluenza’ teen’s attorney blames his mother for fleeing to Mexico

n attorney for a teenager who killed four people in the “affluenza” drunken-driving case may have been forced to go to Mexico with his mother after an apparent violation of his probation, a defense attorney said on Tuesday.

A hearing on whether to move Ethan Couch’s case to adult court lasted only a few minutes without a decision on Tuesday when a judge ruled his parents were not adequately notified about the hearing.

. . .

Couch, 18, and his mother, Tonya Couch, 48, were captured in Puerto Vallarto, Mexico, last month after a manhunt of more than two weeks. She was returned to Texas and faces a third-degree felony charge for helping her son flee while Ethan remains in a Mexican immigration detention center fighting efforts to bring him back to the United States.

Lawyers for Couch want the proceedings in Fort Worth to come to a halt, arguing the case should not go forward because he is not present. They say he may have been abducted by his mother.

than go home and be released on bail to his Mommy.

Maybe his fellow inmates will grow him up a little. Jail can be a crash course.

battle? Either he was abducted (mom is charged with kidnapping, faces 20 years) or he went willingly.
Neither prospect is good for the family.

Get his situation cleared up and then deny that it is kidnapping. I am sure he has a lawyer to walk him through the process.

For the affluenza teen, why not? Lawyers have proposed
even more absurd defenses than this.

his mom left him at the strip club by himself. Of course she later had to pay his bill.

I knew that this would be the argument. Would he go so far as to testify against mommy?

Do I excuse him for going along with his batshitcrazy mother? Not really. But, even at 18 parents still have a lot of influence on their kids and it seems Ethan was very emotionally stunted by both his parents. He clearly doesn't have the capacity to make good decisions. He still needs to be held accountable and his punishment might actually need to be harsher than most people's would be for the same crime. Given what I have read about that family more time in jail might actually be the best thing that ever happened to him.

The Corps is not for dumping dysfunctional individuals. Under stress character wins out, and we have already seen his character. Don't waste time and resources on him.

Maybe the Squids will take him. They could use him for ballast.

This is frickin' ingenious!! His lawyer blames the mother, tries to get a delay in the case.

But HER lawyer will deflect ANY blame away from the mother. Perhaps he'll put the blame on the son.

Divide and conquer. They'll both be in the clear before long, is my guess. Bunch of mother f-ers.
