Saudi Arabia Bans All Flights To And From Iran
Source: Sky News
Saudi Arabia is reportedly stopping all flights to and from Iran - and banning its citizens from travelling there.
Saudi foreign minister Adel al Jubeir told Reuters all commercial ties between the countries would also be cut.
It follows attacks on the Saudi embassy in Iran by protesters angry at the execution of Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al Nimr.
Sunni-led Saudi Arabia claims the killing was part of a war on terrorism - but it has sparked protests among Shia Muslims throughout the region.

(32,723 posts)The Saudis and the Iranians have large armies and real air forces that have been mostly ceremonial until recently.
These two have been at it since they were called Arabia and Persia.

(327 posts)... but the Saudis 'have all the gear, and no idea'!
Their protracted raids over Yemen will not have been possible without - ahem - a little help from their friends (read - my lot, Brits, and your own fellow countrymen). The Sauds are incapable of keeping military aircraft flying for more than a couple of days without that help. I speak from personal experience.

(23,867 posts)It's so stupid: the economies are sucking, so since we can't work it out with words, we'll start blowing stuff up.
I'd like to think we could all get along, but some people want more goodies than they can afford, so we all have to pay. Thanks Bush and Saud.

(7,772 posts)Two years later, in an effort to maintain global demand for U.S. dollars, another system was created called the petrodollar system. In 1973, a deal was struck between Saudi Arabia and the United States in which every barrel of oil purchased from the Saudis would be denominated in U.S. dollars. Under this new arrangement, any country that sought to purchase oil from Saudi Arabia would be required to first exchange their own national currency for U.S. dollars. In exchange for Saudi Arabia's willingness to denominate their oil sales exclusively in U.S. dollars, the United States offered weapons and protection of their oil fields from neighboring nations, including Israel.
By 1975, all of the OPEC nations had agreed to price their own oil supplies exclusively in U.S. dollars in exchange for weapons and military protection.
This petrodollar system, or more simply known as an "oil for dollars" system, created an immediate artificial demand for U.S. dollars around the globe. And of course, as global oil demand increased, so did the demand for U.S. dollars.

Thank again.
