Libya Becomes Latest ISIL Stronghold

WASHINGTON (USA TODAY) — Islamic State militants are establishing a dangerous foothold in Libya as the terror network comes under increasing pressure from the U.S.-led military coalition in Iraq and Syria.

The militants are taking advantage of the chaos that grew after Libyan leader Moammar Ghadafi was ousted and killed in a 2011 revolution as well as a declining Western presence in the country.

U.S. plans to help rebuild Libya after Ghadafi largely fell to the wayside amid growing violence and the 2012 terror attack on the U.S. diplomatic facility in Benghazi that killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

“Libya is probably right now the most significant threat to becoming a full-blown sanctuary” for the Islamic State, said Patrick Johnston, a counterterrorism analyst atRAND Corp.

The Arab spring has been a complete disaster! Libya use to have the highest per capita income in Africa after S. Africa. It's a fucking mess now and we can thank George Bush for getting the ball rolling. Obama should have stayed out of Libya too.

But but but but...they keep saying its a rag tag army of 20,000.

And the might of the US armed forces combined with the fact that neigbouring "allies" like SA who have 500,000 standing soldiers, and Egypt with an equal number the largest in Africa are helpless against their advance.

Some things are just not adding up.

Sometimes the tin foil hat floats down onto my head and I can't help but think both the Saudis and Egyptians who have their own troubles and ties are holding back for political reasons, and the US of course has always needed the latest boogey man to get another trillion in new military spending passed.

benevolent west trying to help poor Africans fantastically backfiring on those poor Africans. But don't worry guys, no Americans soldiers were harmed in the whole affair so all is good and I think (if you believe Rachel Maddow) that the new Libyan govt is going to pay for the cost the US incurred while destroying that country.

Something tells me that the same is waiting for the Syrians if the west have their way with them.

a relatively benign old dictator and replaced him with an active cancer.

That shows some leadership, right there. Real foresight. Almost as good as Bush!
