Small alpine nation struggles to cope with influx of refugees day out from EU summit, where countries will discuss "impossible" plan.

BREZICE, SLOVENIA—A day ahead of a European summit on the migrant crisis, Slovenian officials staggered to cope and tempers flared Saturday at an overcrowded refugee centre as thousands more asylum-seekers poured into the tiny Alpine nation.
European nations have been criticized for being slow to react as hundreds of thousands of people seeking safety pour in through Greece and Italy. But a draft plan submitted to countries coming to the Brussels summit by European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker was already drawing strong opposition.

Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic said the EU plan urges countries not to “wave” asylum-seekers across their borders without consulting with their neighbors.

“That is impossible, whoever wrote this does not understand how things work and must have just woken up from a months-long sleep,” he said Saturday.

1. Yup, us Eastern Europeans are just filled with prejudice and hate, ain't we?

How would the Chinese or the people of India react to a huge influx of refugees from a vastly different culture and religion? How about people in South American countries? Australians? Japanese?

Eastern Europeans do not have a monopoly on xenophobia, and it is deeply unfair to single them out and accuse them of being xenophobic by nature. I suspect large numbers of people in other countries would display just as much xenophobia, or more, if they were facing identical situations.

Why are other Islamic-majority countries not accepting a significant number of these refugees? Are they, too, xenophobes?

Nor is the U.S. willing to take a fair share of refugees. We are a country where some folks think we should spend tax dollars building a wall to keep our southern neighbors out. Don't tell me the U.S. doesn't have a
xenophobic nature.

Please stop focusing on stereotypes of Eastern Europeans.
