Jeb Bush Just Gave A Middle Finger To The Entire Native American Community

GOP presidential hopeful Jeb Bush is totally fine with Washington's NFL team using an un-trademarkable, dictionary-defined racial slur as its name, he said Wednesday.
I dont think [they] should change it, the former Florida governor said on The Arena, a Sirius XM radio program that will premiere later this week, according to ABC News. But again, I dont think politicians ought to be having any say about that, to be honest with you. I dont find it offensive. Native American tribes generally dont find it offensive.
It's good to know that a white man isn't offended by a term that's never been used to denigrate him and never will be. But Bush's casual dismissal of the mascot issue is telling.
Its a sport, for crying out loud. Its a football team," he said. "Washington has a huge fan base -- Im missing something here, I guess.

I dont think it should change it, the Republican presidential hopeful said on the The Arena. But again, I dont think politicians ought to be having any say about that, to be honest with you. I dont find it offensive. Native American tribes generally dont find it offensive.
The Washington Redskins owner, Daniel Snyder, has vowed that the team will never change its name, even as Native American activists have objected to the dictionary-defined racial slur.
Last June, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Offices Trademark Trial and Appeal Board cancelled the teams trademark registrations because they were disparaging to Native Americans at the respective times they were registered, though the team is pursuing an appeal.
Snyder also happens to be helping bankroll Bushs presidential campaign. In April, he contributed $100,000 to the Right to Rise Super PAC, a legally unaffiliated pro-Bush committee for which Bush himself actively raised money.
The Oneida Indian Nation's Change the Mascot campaign released a statement denouncing Bush for "endorsing the NFLs preferred racial slur against Native Americans."
What is surprising is that in promoting the use of this slur, the governor somehow believes he speaks for Native Americans and can assert that Native American people do not find this slur offensive. He clearly is missing something," the group said. "What is even more appalling is the governors declaration that because he personally doesnt find this slur offensive, that makes it acceptable. This should be a very simple open-and-shut issue in the 2016 campaign: No presidential candidate should be promoting this racial slur against Native Americans.
This sweaty patrician is one petulant, hate-filled sob.
And he thinks he is bred to rule.

(1,369 posts)Well, on second thought, not so amazing HE should be. Bush is going to go down like his brother's neocon advisors: wrong, Wrong, WRONG about everything. Reverse Midas touch. Grace was not granted to him. Or common sense.
Jesus wept.

Would Bush still say "I don't find it offensive. It's a sport, for crying out loud. I'm missing something here, I guess"?
Or would he scream "Reverse Racism!"?

(18,318 posts)Both minor league teams. Not to detract from your point, but in some quarters "Cracker" is not a disparaging expression.
BTW, there is a U. Northern Colorado intramural team called "The Fighting Whities." Their slogan: " Everything's Going to be All White." They have raised six-figures for minority scholarships by sales of their t-shirts and such.

I believe the trademark ruling will be overturned on appeal.
And I'm no skins fan.

In his fevered mind, we, the Great Unwashed, should be grateful that yet another Bush has deigned to lead us.
Oh joy.

Like Jeb Bush just said today, he sees nothing wrong with bigoted football team names. Bush doesn't care that the name offends, 'is hurtful' to a very, large percent of our American society
