Tropical Storm Erika has dissipated over Cuba, prompting the National Hurricane Center to lift tropical storm watches and warnings, according to a special advisory posted shortly before 9 a.m.
A more detailed updated is expected later this morning.
In its 8 a.m. advisory, officials in Miami reported that Erika was taking a more west-northwest path and will continue that direction through the night. By Saturday night, the storm is expected to move even further to the northwest and slow in speed.
A hurricane hunter plane was investigating the system around 8 a.m. At that time, Erika was about 55 miles northeast of Holguin, Cuba, with winds as high as 40 mph. This general motion was expected to continue with a decrease in forward speed during the next 48 hours. Forecasters expect the storm to turn more toward the west on Sunday.
Forecasters expected Erika to weaken as it moves over Cuba and wind shear continues to tear at the storm.
