TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Thousands of bus riders in Tucson are still without steady public transportation as the longest strike in recent history continues.
The strike by around 530 bus drivers, mechanics, operators and other Sun Tran workers began Aug. 6 after negotiations between the union and Sun Tran broke down. The previous record was held during a strike in 2001 that lasted around 10 days.
Management is working with a federal mediator to schedule a meeting with the union, Sun Tran spokeswoman Kandi Young said.
Meanwhile, only eight routes are operating, and there will be no service this weekend. Sun Tran provides about 66,000 passenger rides on an average weekday.

(23,156 posts)in Alexandria Va. I went out to my bus stop, and after a much longer wait than usual, someone told me there was a bus strike happening. I can't remember how I got to work that day (it was a VERY long time ago), but I kind of remember scrambling for the next few weeks to get to work.
I honestly can't recall any details. But my story does point out that the individuals inconvenienced by such strikes usually have no clue whatsoever of the issues involved, and only care about getting somewhere.
I am a HUGE supporter of unions, but the sad truth is that labor issues are almost never properly conveyed to the public.
