After The New Republic on Tuesday preemptively reported that a small number of Black Lives Matter activists were on their way to a Hillary Clinton campaign stop in Keene, New Hampshire, the potential protest against the leading Democratic presidential candidate never took place because security at the event barred the group entry.
Instead of having the opportunity to confront Clinton in a public settingsuch as those recently faced by candidate Bernie Sandersthe five activists from Massachusetts, including Black Lives Matter Boston founder Daunasia Yancey, were ushered into an overflow room to watch the event and later treated to a closed-door meeting with Clinton to which reporters were not allowed.
According to TNR:
When they arrived at todays Clinton event, which focused on substance abuse and the heroin epidemic, after first sharing their talking points and questions exclusively with the New Republic, the activists found the entrances closed by U.S. Secret Service who said the venue was at capacity. Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors, who was in contact with the five activists, later told the New Republic that the activists were eventually let into an overflow room. Following the event, Clinton met with the group for about 15 minutes in a private meeting that they claim turned contentious at times, and featured Clinton giving unsolicited advice for the direction of the movement.

(10,650 posts)She kept them off the podium and from hijacking the event. Then she met privately with them. Evidently, she didn't bow down for them in the meeting either.

(4,713 posts)You're right she didn't bow down or run away, her campaign did the intelligent thing & scheduled a meeting. HRC was also rightfully put in her place when she tried to shove her nose into how the Black Lives Matter movement should be handled.

See, you agreed with me!

(4,713 posts)I think both of them were smart in arranging the meeting which is what occurred according to the article.

(3,811 posts)every campaign will be extremely guarded toward access of BLM people at campaign events. How could it be otherwise?

(3,811 posts)i.e. a contained venue, secret service working security and crowd control, prior knowledge of the potential for an incident, it worked out better for Hillary's campaign.

(4,713 posts)This is called coordinating, & I'm glad to see they put HRC in her place when she tried to tell them how to run the movement.

(4,713 posts)minorities don't feel that the input of a 60 yr old white lady is really the right direction for them?
BillZBubb
(10,650 posts)Shame on you for making her age an issue!!!!!
That 60 yr old white lady could be the next president of the United States. That 60 yr. old lady knows more about politics than all the others in that room put together. You can always learn something from those with real success and experience.
And if they didn't want to listen, they could have been polite in their refusal and not "put her in her place".
giftedgirl77
(4,713 posts)Obviously they didn't straight up tell her to fuck off, they just told her to stay in her lane which obviously more people obviously need to start doing & not just to her but confused white folks in general.

(30,247 posts)They hijacked Sanders' event. The Clinton campaign learned from that incident and handled the situation well.

(30,247 posts)The Sanders campaign did not expect what happened at his event. The Clinton campaign was forewarned by seeing what occurred at Sanders' event and acted accordingly.

(67,782 posts)The protest was NOT "shut down", in fact had the five potential protesters shown up a few minutes earlier they would have gotten into the main room and done whatever they intended to do.
I seem to be using this term a lot around here these days at DU - that's the "inconvenient truth"!

(12,882 posts)is your "inconvenient truth" here. Remember, they're not tagging along with Bernie yet. In spite of the SS's recent gaffs, they're quite a force for anyone to have to contend with if it comes to contention!

(19,326 posts)From the article:
The group's remarks and questions varied a bit from the script they prepared, which focused on criminal justice policies Clinton had supported while her husband was president, but not in tone. "I asked specifically about her and her family's involvement in the War on Drugs at home and abroad, and the implications that has had on communities of color and especially black people in terms of white supremacist violence," Yancey told me in an interview after the meeting. "And I wanted to know how she felt about her involvement in those processes.
Asked whether Clinton actually proposed policies in the meeting, Jones said, "Not that I recall, no. In fact, I know that she didnt because she was projecting that what the Black Lives Matter movement needs to do is X,Y, and Zto which we pushed back that it is not her place to tell the Black Lives Matter movement or black people what to do, and that the real work doesnt lie in the victim-blaming that that implies. And that was a rift in the conversation."

(10,056 posts)Interesting how the campaign is spinning the 'no media allowed' circumstance.
It looks like Clinton was looking for a BLM photo op and didn't get the protesters to bite.

(816 posts)I can imagine they were angry considering they wanted a Bernie moment under their belts. As for the unsolicited advice they were given, maybe what would help is if they came with the solutions to the problem and asked the democratic candidates for help in achieving them. Better than yelling and hijacking events, would be to have a plan to solve their problems. I can't imagine Bernie or Hillary not offering to help with THEIR solutions. These confrontations are doing nothing but upsetting the very people who can help them. Maybe Bernie needs some protections going forward. Nobody wants to stifle their voice and everyone can feel their frustrations at not getting their voices heard. But maybe working with the candidates instead of these hijacking events would be better for their cause. Just my opinion. One more point. These confrontations can be dangerous if tempers and passions get out of hand. Bernie needs to have some protection from them.

(1,805 posts)with Republicans? Bernie (my candidate), Hillary and O'Malley already gave statements supporting them. Trump - I hate even typing his name - said no one could take over his mic. Probably has thugs for bodyguards. Wait, doesn't the Secret Service (an oxymoron) provide security to candidates?
Time to start with him and the rest of the GOPers who are NOT for equal anything. Except wars.
