Hundreds injured in blast in north-eastern city, a base for refining and petrochemical industries

Hundreds of people have been injured by a massive explosion at an industrial port in Tianjin in north-east China, caused by a shipment of explosives that went up in flames.

Three or four hundred people arrived at the Tianjin harbour hospital after the blast, some in ambulances and some on their own, the Beijing News reported, quoting an unnamed medic who works there.

An employee of another hospital also said the emergency department was full, and staff are trying to contact all their doctors, the paper reported.

“The hospital cannot count how many patients we have received – there are too many of them and many of them have burn injuries,” said one doctor at another hospital, who had been called back from a conference in Beijing to treat the injured.

1. My brother did some work with Chinese companies

He said he had never even dreamed of so many dangerous safety rules don't even exist. The few rules that do exist are ignored.

2. This was a massive screw up.

The scale of the damage is enormous. The entire refinery went up in a mushroom cloud from what I've seen. Nearby buildings look like they've been through a combination of an earthquake and a massive blast.

4. "Petrol storage station" plus "shipment of explosives" equals "bad combination."

It would be a darn shame if the explosion blew up all the information on federal employees they've been swiping for the last year or so.

5. There's an LNG terminal in Tianjin

Don't know the source of the explosion, but the LNG facility probably went up at least as one of the secondary explosions.

Kudos to everyone everywhere who protested LNG terminals in their town. Time to shut down LNG worldwide. Too dangerous for words.

6. latest figures: 7 dead, 180 injured

Huge explosions hit an industrial area in the northeast Chinese port city of Tianjin late on Wednesday, killing at least seven people and injuring 180, state-run news agency Xinhua said.

State broadcaster China Central Television said the explosions erupted in a shipment of explosives at around 11.30 p.m. local time, triggering a blast wave felt kilometers (miles) away.
...
The agency said the explosion had ripped through a warehouse storing "dangerous goods".
...
Central Television said on its website there had been two explosions within 30 seconds of each other and that about 100 fire trucks had been sent to the scene. Xinhua said fireballs from an initial blast had ignited further explosions in premises nearby.

9. The thing I wonder about....

...is the questions of how the explosives had been packed, stored, labelled and handled. Have people being trying to cut corners?

Regulations on the transportation of Class 1 explosives are extensive but more to the point, the regulations are common sense and good practice so you do things by the book.
