Nuclear-Armed India, Pakistan on Edge After 12-Hour Gunbattle

Source: Reuters

A 12-hour gunbattle involving heavily-armed men dressed in military fatigues who seized a police station near the border with Pakistan ended Monday, Indian police said.

Three assailants were among nine people killed during the incident in the frontier state of Punjab.

The gunmen had pulled up at the police complex in a stolen car with automatic weapons blazing at about 5 a.m. (7:30 p.m. ET Sunday).

Any proof of links between Pakistan and the attackers would be sure to increase tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbors. India and Pakistan have fought three wars since both nations gained independence in 1947.

GURDASPUR, India - Ten people including three civilians were killed on Monday when gunmen wearing army uniforms stormed a police station in northern India near the border with Pakistan, sparking a shootout lasting almost 11 hours.

Police said three attackers had been killed in the battle with security forces that began in the early hours of Monday and terrified local residents.

Why do we keep feeding Pakistan? Let it go bankrupt and starve.

Those dollars could be better utilized feeding the free Balochistan movement and creating an independent Balochistan.

Balochistan's Gwadar port and border crossing to Afghanistan in Quetta can then be used for supplying our troops in Afghanistan completely bypassing Pakistan and its terrorist state.

India Blames Pakistan Group for Attack Killing 6 in Punjab
by Bibhudatta PradhanUnni Krishnan

India blamed a Pakistani militant group for an attack on Monday that killed six people and threatens to disrupt planned talks between the nuclear-armed neighbors.

India’s Home Ministry suspects that Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba is behind the attacks, a government official told reporters in New Delhi. He asked not to be identified, citing ministry rules.

Modi had met Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif earlier this month for the first time in more than a year, sparking hopes of a detente between the long-time foes. The national security advisors from both countries had planned to meet soon to restart a peace dialogue.

“It’s all up in the air now,” said C. Uday Bhaskar, director of the Society for Policy Studies in New Delhi. “The attack shows a certain degree of professionalism and bears the hallmark of a larger agenda of derailing the process.”

India will give befitting reply if provoked, says Rajnath Singh

Rajendra Sharma,TNN | Jul 27, 2015, 08.03 PM IST

BHOPAL: Union Home minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said that security forces will give a befitting reply to whoever targets the country. He was reacting to the terror attack in Gurudaspur district, in the northern frontier state of Punjab where heavily armed men stormed a police station, killing several people and wounding others during wee hours of Monday. Singh said, "We are conducting an inquiry into the attack and BSF has been instructed to enhance vigil along the entire international border."

The home minister was in Neemuch district of Madhya Pradesh where he took salute from the marching contingents of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) at its cradle as part of the paramilitary force's 76th Raising Day celebrations. Addressing the parade, Singh said, "Who so ever target us, security forces and our Army will give them a befitting reply. He said he will make a statement about the whole incident in Parliament on Tuesday.

Rajnath Singh said India wants to have cordial relations with Pakistan but at the cost of national pride. "We will give appropriate reply if our national interest is challenged", he reiterated. Singh said he was was unable to understand why cross- border terror incidents were continuing unabated despite India wanting good relations with Pakistan. Recalling efforts by India for peace between the two countries, he said, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif to his swearing-in ceremony last year. "I cannot understand why time and again cross-border terror incidents are taking place when we want good relations with our neighbour. I want to tell our neighbour that we want peace but not at the cost of our national pride," he emphasised.

Rajnath Singh said that he had stated this earlier and will say it again that while India will not be the first to attack or fire, but if challenged, will give a befitting reply (muh tod jawab)," he said adding that while he was leaving for Neemuch the incident was reported from Gurdaspur and action was on as he talked. "I spoke to Punjab chief minister Prakash Singh Badal, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval, Director General of Border Security Force (BSF) D K Pathak and union home secretary L C Goyal before leaving for this event," he said.
