NASCAR Tracks Unite, Jointly Ask Fans Not To Fly The Confederate Battle Flag

Source: WSVN.com Channel 7 News Maimi Jul 03, 2015 3:59 PM

Every track that hosts a NASCAR national series race has now asked its fans to refrain from displaying the Confederate flag at its events.

In a statement signed by International Speedway Corp., Speedway Motorsports Inc. and 30 tracks, the facilities vowed to have "welcoming environments in all of sports and entertainment."

The statement released Thursday includes independent tracks such as Tony Stewart's Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, Pocono Raceway and Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

NASCAR Chairman Brian France has called the flag a symbol he personally finds offensive and said he wants to be as aggressive as possible in barring it from sanctioned events.

1. Wow...How times have changed indeed.

Yes there many other steps to take, but who'd have thought the day would come for this particular one.

6. I must say, it HAS BEEN business as usual.

Until somebody else makes a issue of it.

If he found it so offensive, why didn't he say something before?

We all know why...

Business, that's why.

Nothing against you, Cha..

3. From the responses I saw today from

various articles, I sincerely doubt that some of the fans will comply, in fact, many were thinking about bringing their own Confederate flags to hand out to people..wanting the parking lots full of them.

5. Still, good for them saying it.

It's predictably an unpopular stand, so I'm a bit surprised they're doing it.

7. Last gasps

Sure you might see lots of them for a little bit but over time they
will dwindle in their numbers. Although to me NASCAR is boring and
pointless the organization, sponsors, drivers, auto and tire companies,
and crews are very big into "branding" and being loyal to the racing
fans and when the word comes down from the top about that bloody
rag not being wanted at NASCAR events that is a very powerful message.

Now out in the country at the small dirt tracks the stars and bars will be
seen for years w/an attitude that NASCAR is just big city college boys who
don't understand "country roots."
