Obama's approval rating grows following memorable week
Source: CNN
Could Barack Obama's great week mark a turning point in his poll numbers?
After months of stagnant approval ratings, a new CNN/ORC poll finds that for the first time in more than two years, 50% of Americans approve of the way Obama is handling the presidency. And his overall ratings are bolstered by increasingly positive reviews of his treatment of race relations and the economy.
The new poll follows a week in which two Supreme Court cases boosted the president's legacy by upholding the government subsidies at the heart of Obama's health care law, the Affordable Care Act, and affirming same-sex couples' right to marry. All this while Obama took several opportunities to directly address the nation's racial tensions, closing out the week by singing "Amazing Grace" on national television.
The new poll shows Obama's approval rating up five points since a May survey, when just 45% approved of the job he was doing as president and 52% disapproved. The poll marks the first time his approval rating has been at 50% or higher since May, 2013, and only the second time in that stretch that his disapproval rating has fallen below 50%. It currently stands at 47%.

(11,833 posts)know in their hearts that President Obama truly wakes up every morning thinking about doing what is best for the American people and the world. He's a thoughtful and brilliant man who serves with a deep understanding of expanding freedoms to include more people, and always has in mind fundamental notions of fair play and decency. He assumed office at the height of the worst crises since the great depression.
His administration has made progressive policies popular once again, and we must build on it and get another democratic President and a more liberal Congress. We also must each and every one of us keep searching our souls for how to behave with dignity and grace. Not to accept injustice. To give us the tools we need to keep moving forward for our sisters and brothers. I feel Martin, Hillary and Bernie would all do a fine job as President. I'm proud to be part of the left wing of the democratic party. Let's keep pushing toward universal health care, reducing the number of people in prison, expanding civil rights and reducing the enormous inequality of wealth in this country!

(160 posts)This just proves how disengaged Americans are with what directly affects them. Yes it was a great week for marriage equality and the racist Confederate flag getting such bad press. But ACA and TPP overshadow any good that came out of last week. That millions of Americans now have healthcare is great, but what the have is expensive (for taxpayers) and substandard. Single Payer or Medicare for all would have been much better options. ACA is just a give away for big insurance. TPP will be Obama's legacy.

(68,868 posts)The ACA decision last week as a good one for country.
Only assholes like Antonin Scalia disagree.
As another DUer says, the fringe left hates Obama, the fringe right hates Obama, and it's getting harder and harder to tell the difference.
I am glad you and Ted Cruz are having a big sad over the ACA.

Looking at the source though, Obama must have broke through the barrier and CNN is no longer the anti- liberal,anti- Obama like before. I guess CNN figured out Obama is not a liberal and certainly not a Democrat.
And just maybe Wall St. employees were surveyed and voted twice.

It's about a Holistic view.
After all, FDR's presidency was not ruined by his appalling treatment of Japanese-Americans.

(2,950 posts)Based on my observation, TPP is opposed by a large majority of Americans. Are we supposed to pretend that Fast Track didn't just pass Congress, and that the 99% are about to get thrown under the bus once again, in order to benefit the 1%?

But then through his actions as President, well that's quite different. His ideological views certainly doesn't correspond with his promises made..to unions, and middle class, working class Americans with trade deals....Oh by the way does anyone remember when Obama said he world "re-negotiate NAFTA ?
whereby we could stop the flow of manufacturing jobs overseas"
I rest my case

(24,329 posts)Presidents tend to benefit when things go well for them... and last week went very well for the President.
I think the approval ratings also may get a little extra boost from it being the Neanderthal court we have now that upheld the ACA, Gay Marriage, etc.
He had a court that has been fairly hostile. So it looks better (IMO)
In a month or so it may be higher or it may dip.
My problem with these pols are, they tend to ask about approval vs rating a President and his accomplishments
As has been pointed out on the ACA, if you ask some people if they support the ACA you get a % that say 'No!' reflexively (though you have to say Obamacare if you want to skew it, because they don't know what the ACA is)
But, if you ask them if they support provision A, B, C... they support them
Same with the job he's done. (As someone posted earlier) If you look at some of the things he's championed, supported or whatever on a scale of 1-10 he doesn't do badly
If you asked me do I approve or Disapprove, I'd approve.
It wouldn't be a ringing endorsement but he's over a 6 and that's an approve

(20,450 posts)Listen, his killing of bin Laden and averting a DEPRESSION...
These two accomplishments alone would have been enough.
If it were Clinton and/or Bush (especially), the approval would be way up!!!
Trust me.
