Rick Perry: Charleston Shooting An 'Accident' Due To Drug Use, Manipulated By Obama To Ban Guns

Source: Right Wing Watch, People for the American Way

In an interview today with Steve Malzberg of Newsmax, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry described the mass shooting at an African American church in Charleston earlier this week as an “accident” that was possibly caused by the over-prescription of medication.

(...)

“This is the MO of this administration, any time there is an accident like this — the president is clear, he doesn’t like for Americans to have guns and so he uses every opportunity, this being another one, to basically go parrot that message,” Perry said.

Instead of talking about guns, Perry said, we should be talking about prescription drugs: “Also, I think there is a real issue to be talked about. It seems to me, again without having all the details about this, that these individuals have been medicated and there may be a real issue in this country from the standpoint of these drugs and how they’re used.”

(...)

He added that while the shooting was “a crime of hate,” he didn’t know if it should be called a terrorist attack.

He may have been referring to a theory the conspiracy website Infowars posted about on Thursday that postulated Roof may have been taking a drug called suboxone, which supposedly causes personalities to change and prompt violent outbursts in its users.

http://thinkprogress.org/election/2015/06/19/3672122/rick-perry-says-obama-administration-always-overreacts-accidents-like-charleston-shooting/

Wow. Just wow.

Invoking Alex Jones drug theory (that talking point is being pushed by Infowars, with a big boost from Drudge), spreading more baseless paranoia that "Obama's gonna take yer guns away," while making excuses for the racist terrorist.

They really can't help themselves. Being an asshole is in their DNA.

Perry must really, really be afraid of losing the Strom Thurmond voters in the the South Carolina primary.

---

For comparison, this is how a real leader reacts, following the type of horrific crime as what took place in Charleston yesterday. No fake smart guy glasses were needed in the filming of this piece:

He just turned off quite of few of his potential supporters. How blatant does a case have to be that these guys can't say, "Well, shit, I guess this is a case of racially-inspired domestic terrorism, and maybe we should at least have a conversation about guns in this country."

A lady in my office is a hard core Republican, has often told me Reagan is her gold standard for what a President should be and..........she had to go home early yesterday because she was so upset about the events that occurred 100 miles away (we are in Columbia, which was the home town of the shooter.) She is a Republican, but she is a sane and caring person. Perry is an absolute idiot for playing to the NRA base on this one.

So the (alleged) murderer was high on a heroin substitute now? And that's the excuse why nine people died of lead poisoning by his own hands?

Life without parole and a whole lot of therapy for the murderer. Though I suspect that solitary confinement may be awaiting the murderer.

As for Mr. Perry's remarks - I recommend he sits in on a couple of group therapy sessions where the participants have abused drugs (legal and otherwise) and bad things have happened. Then he might understand.

"This is the MO of this administration, any time there is an accident like this, -- the President is clear, he doesn't like for Americans to have guns and so he uses every opportunity, this being one, to basically go parrot that message," Perry Said.

"he doesn't like for Americans to have guns"??

That is a LIE!

Perry, like all the other freaks running for the GOP nomination, LIES!

Just disgusting.

Edit: Oh, and compare the responses from the Rethugs to any of the Democratic primary candidates. Not picking sides among the candidates here but they are light years more responsible, compassionate and grounded in reality.

When that Marine shot and killed Chris Kyle and another man, Rick Perry was not talking about "accident[s]" and "over medication". I do not think I heard Rick Perry defending that Marine, trying to get him a not guilty verdict, or attempting to get him a lighter sentence. Did Rick Perry say anything about and "accident", or any other issue when Nadal Hassan shot up a Texas Army base? Was Rick Perry one of the people pushing for the government to declare that incident a terrorist attack and give the soldiers killed in that incident the same treatment as soldiers killed on foreign soil?

So, is everyone to conclude that when white people are killed, or when Arab/Muslims kill people it is a crime, or a terrorist attack, but when African-Americans are killed by white people it is an accident brought on by over medication?
