Saints and Pelicans owner Tom Benson wins mental competency trial

An Orleans Parish judge has sided with Saints and Pelicans owner Tom Benson in the dispute with his estranged relatives over his mental health.
The ruling by Orleans Parish Civil District Court Judge Kern Reese is a blow to Benson’s daughter, Renee, and her children, Rita and Ryan LeBlanc, who were aiming to get the family patriarch deemed mentally incompetent after he cut them out of his billion-dollar business empire several months ago.
While Benson’s relatives can seek a review of the ruling, there may not be much else they can do to force their way back into the family business.
In a memorandum explaining his ruling, Reese said two psychiatrists who examined Benson as part the proceedings found that Benson had sustained “a mild cognitive impairment,” but nothing that would “rob him of his own volition and ability to make reasoned decisions.”
