1. If Western Europe insists on pushing Greece into austerity measures that cause suffering, Greece
will, I predict, move closer to Russia. And that will not be a pleasant situation for Germany, France, Great Britain, Austria, Switzerland and other countries.
Russia is looking to build its own trade pact, and Greece might very well end up in it if Western European leaders are not careful. |

4. Putin Tells Greece Financial Aid Is Tied to Russian Pipeline
Russian President says help depends on Athens signing up to gas pipeline to Europe
![]() Greece's Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, left, shakes hands with Russian President Vladimir Putin during their early April meeting in Moscow. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin said Thursday he was ready to consider financial help for debt-stricken Greece, so long as Athens signs up to a project to bring more Russian gas to Europe. Greece’s leftist government, which is locked in negotiations on economic overhauls with its international creditors, has hoped to receive an economic boost from Russia. According to a Kremlin statement Thursday, Mr. Putin told Mr. Tsipras in a telephone call that the promise of Russian financing is tied to Greece’s participation in a natural gas pipeline that aims to pump Russian supplies through to Turkey and onward to Europe. http://www.wsj.com/articles/putin-tells-greece-financial-aid-is-tied-to-russian-pipeline-1431009688 The folks with money (Western, Russian, Chinese, etc.) are usually willing to help as long as you do what they want. Anything that weakens the unity of the EU is something that Russia wants. |
