Report: Islamic State Excavating Destroyed Syrian Nuclear Site
Source: Jewish Press
ISIS may be after the buried radioactive materials. They took over the region with the destroyed nuclear reactor in 2014.
Syrian residents from villages near the destroyed Syrian nuclear site, Al-Kibar, around 60 kilometers from Deir A-Zor report that members of Islamic State (ISIS / Daesh) have been excavating the destroyed Syrian secret nuclear facility.
<snip>
Residents who visited the area also report seeing empty metal barrels, and are now afraid that more radioactive material has been released.
Islamic State may be looking for radioactive materials to make a dirty bomb, or perhaps they may even believe they might find a nuclear bomb underneath the rubble.
<snip>
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was finally able to confirm in 2011 that the Al-Kibar site was a secret nuclear facility.

(60,065 posts)a lot of radioactive soil. The excavators are signing their own death sentence if they handle any of the radioactive material. I don't know how hot the site is, but I wouldn't want to be poking around there.

Radiation poisoning is a horrible way to die. As far as I am concerned, you are better off if it kills you quick, as opposed to suffering from organ failure and leukemia over weeks or months.

(5,751 posts)That's what they told me. Then they made me a "Munitions Maintenance Mechanic". No equivalent job outside the military.

(60,065 posts)It was either those, or nothing. I took nothing. I dropped out for about 10 years.

(5,169 posts)I was told I scored in the top 1% on the ASVAB. So they sent me to E.T. "A" school, and then I went out on an ammunition ship and repaired radios and test equipment.
This was late 70s/Early 80s, so computers had not yet began to proliferate yet.

(7,828 posts)Seems like agitprop to me.
If true where are the current satellite views? Where is the supporting posting from AP, Reuters or any European or Asian press sources? where are the comments on this from IAEA or any government?
Rumor and speculation from a likely source IMO.
