Pope orders cardinals to investigate Vatican leaks

Source: Reuters

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict has set up a commission of cardinals to investigate the leaks of sensitive documents to the media alleging corruption and mismanagement in the Vatican.

The documents included private letters to the pope from an archbishop who was transferred to Washington after he blew the whistle on what he said was nepotism and cronyism in the awarding of contracts, and documents alleging internal conflicts about the Vatican bank.

The Vatican said the commission would be made up of three retired cardinals: Spaniard Julian Herranz, Jozef Tomko of Slovakia and Salvatore De Giorgi of Italy.

A statement said they would "undertake an authoritative investigation and throw light" on how the leaks happened.

No wandering off on the tour of the Vatican with any man in a red dress who wants to check your plumbing.

Just a concern that leaks happened. Well, leaks happen when those in authority do not properly address the issues being raised. And heaven forbid that the Catholic Church would ever allow for transparency. So much for learning any lessons from the pedophile Priest debacle several years ago. It is still business as usual. The last two Popes have driven the Catholic Church into the ditch.

Maybe the religious leaders in these countries are more likely to conform to the Pope's right-wing, authoritarian regime.

Slovakia

Italy and Slovakia were either allied with Hitler's Germany or had amicable relationships with it during WWII. Don't misunderstand this. That does not mean that the people in those countries were NAZI sympathizers. But there is a rather interesting correlation.

The Slovak Republic (Slovak: Slovenská republika), also known as the First Slovak Republic (Slovak: Prvá slovenská republika) or the Slovak State (Slovak: Slovenský štát), was a semi independent state under strong influence of Nazi Germany, which existed from 14 March 1939 to 8 May 1945. It existed on roughly the same territory as present-day Slovakia (without the southern and eastern parts). The Republic bordered Germany, the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, General Government (German-occupied remnant of Poland), and Hungary.

The Slovak State was recognized by Germany and several other states including the Provisional Government of the Republic of China, NDH, El Salvador, Estonia, Italy, Hungary, Japan, Lithuania, Manchukuo, Mengjiang, Romania, the Soviet Union, Spain, Switzerland, and Vatican City. The first Slovak Republic's legal existence was retroactively nullified by the World War II victorious allies through the nullification of the Munich Agreement and all its consequences.

Spain

The Spanish State under General Franco was officially non-belligerent during World War II. This status, although not recognised by international law, was intended to express the regime's sympathy and material support for the Axis Powers, to which Spain offered considerable material, economic, and military assistance. Despite this ideological sympathy, Spain did not enter the war as a belligerent and, in fact, frustrated German designs on Gibraltar and stationed field armies at the Pyrenees to dissuade Germany from occupying the Iberian Peninsula. This apparent contradiction can be explained by Franco's pragmatism and his determination to act principally in Spanish interests, in the face of Allied economic pressure, Axis military demands, and Spain's geographic isolation.

Italy

On 10 June 1940, as the French government fled to Bordeaux before the German invasion, declaring Paris an open city, Mussolini felt the conflict would soon end and declared war on Britain and France. As he said to the Army's Chief-of-Staff, Marshal Badoglio:

I only need a few thousand dead so that I can sit at the peace conference as a man who has fought.[43]
