4 dead in home; carbon monoxide eyed, car running in garage

Source: AP-Excite

By COLLEEN LONG and MICHAEL BALSAMO

NEW YORK (AP) — Four elderly people were found dead in a home Friday in an apparent carbon monoxide poisoning after a car was left running in an attached garage, police said.

The victims were 83-year-old Jerry Hugel, his wife, 80-year-old Marie Hugel, 70-year-old Gloria Greco and 76-year-old Walter Vonthadden, police said. The bodies were discovered when a relative of the Hugels went to check on them because they hadn't answered the phone at their Queens home. Jerry Hugel was found next to a running car in the garage.

Neighbors lined the streets and sidewalks in the suburban Floral Park neighborhood next to Long Island's Nassau County. Some cried as police officers and firefighters walked around the Cape Cod-style, two-story home.

"They were wonderful people," Helga Harter, a neighbor who had known the couple for decades, said through tears as she stood on a street corner, looking at the home. "They were married for 60 years."

1. I make the case that everyone should have a basic knowledge of chemistry and biology from highschool.

2. If this is an OK "way to go", why don't 'we' use it to execute the condemned?

chemicaliness! CO2 combines with the hemoglobin in red blood cells and they transport it to the lungs, where the CO2 is released. And picks up an oxygen molecule. Amen.
CO combines with the same hemoglobin and does not release it. Thus, many blood cells die and are no longer transporting O2.

You die from lack of oxygen getting to brain cells.

Not only is it a lethal poison, it's flammable: according to https://www.mathesongas.com/pdfs/products/Lower-(LEL)-&-Upper-(UEL)-Explosive-Limits-.pdf, only acetylene and hydrogen have a wider range of flammable concentrations in air.

Too many elderly people have fallen prey to poor economic circumstances and in desperation, attempt (and sometimes succeed) suicide.

Then again, America has been a country for the young people and in a lot of cases, old people are forgotten, neglected and ignored. In Asia, old people are revered for their experience and wisdom - although that is also changing due to the influx of American culture.

Many young people seem to think that old people are just obstacles in their ability to enjoy the inheritance fully. I wanted to slap a young son of one of my patients who had no shame to say, "I hope she dies before all the inheritance is spent on medical care."

On Edit: for the deceased.

Maybe the elderly gentleman suffered a sudden onset illness just after he started the car for warming it up....still had to open the garage door...the unfortunate events followed.

I'm "guessing" the old man maybe turned the car on to warm it up, and forgot about it maybe. He may have realized his mistake and went out to turn it off but the fumes were too much. If it were suicide, why not lay next to your wife instead of the car.

Or maybe he was going to kill himself in the garage and has no idea anyone else died.
