House bill would eliminate the need for a permit to carry a concealed weapon in Ohio

Source: Newsnet5.com

CLEVELAND - A law introduced in the Ohio House would allow Ohioans to carry a concealed weapon with no permit and no training.

Gun advocates are cautiously optimistic about House Bill 147, introduced in the Ohio house by Ashville Representative Ron Hood.

“What other constitutional right do we have to go get a license from the state to exercise?” said Jim Irvine of Buckeye Firearms Association.

The law would also stop police officers from any search or seizure of a law-abiding citizen with a firearm.

Snip~ "As of now, only 5 states—Arizona, Vermont, Kansas, Wyoming, and Alaska—allow the law, but supporters expect more to follow suit."

laws like this. I think gunners won't see it the way I do, but never in my 69 years would I have thought we should all be able to walk around carrying guns.
Life is not that dangerous. Most of us will not be carrying guns on our persons.
I am thankful for that.

(maybe) In my town, Columbus OH, we have more murders by gun in
one year then the country of Japan has in about 10 years.

I have hunted and owned guns for years but this is flat out nuts.

In the good old days of the wild west they got law and order into
frontier towns by not allowing people to carry guns into town.

If all you own are hammers then every problem you see looks like a nail.

And I have old family ties to Ohio - grandparents immigrated there in the late 1880's early 1900's. Lots of gravestones there.

Had it when I had a business and carried large amounts of cash on me, then let it lapse when the business went under. I never had to pull my firearm, and consider the exercise a colossal waste of time for a false sense of security. That is all.

Why should destructive people make the decisions for everyone?

Does that make sense?

The control of firearms and ammunition really needs to be on purchasing side, not the carrying side. The purchasing process has become way too lax IMO.

You should have to go through meaningful classes, education and background checks before you are allowed to purchase.

How no one thought it useful to compare the 5 states listed to the national average for firearm murders before criticizing the law. Where #1 is the lowest per capita rate and #51 is the highest (so we can include DC), based on FBI figures for 2010 and usliberals.about.com:

Vermont: #1 (42% gun owners)
Wyoming: #10 (60% gun owners)
Kansas: #22 (42% gun owners)
Alaska: #23 (58% gun owners)
Arizona: #40 (31% gun owners)

and:
Ohio: #27 (32% gun owners)

for reference, the US areas with highest and lowest percentage of gun owners are:
Wyoming: #10 (60% gun owners)
Hawaii: #3 (7% gun owners)

So it would seem if the Ohio law fails to pass, you would still be safer in four out of the five states where the proposed law is in effect. Feel free to imagine any correlation you want with these numbers, but if a state with 42% of its people owning guns and unlicensed concealed carry has a lower firearm murder rate than one with only 7% ownership and a very restrictive "may issue" policy for concealed carry, it is difficult to argue that either simple possession or concealed carry is the big problem that has to be dealt with to reduce firearm murders.

I prefer to hang out with liberals who are intelligent, rational and make their decisions based on facts and consistent application of liberal principles. But occasionally I feel the need to renew my cynicism and remind myself that the Democratic Party has its equivalent of Westboro Baptist, though without Westboro's level of intellect and introspection in regard to the issues they care about. Just yesterday I saw a DU discussion filled with all caps profanity and an outright call for brutal violence against fellow Americans for no reason other than ideological disagreement. In fact, one of the ruder people in that discussion is also in this one. Purely coincidence, I suppose.

So no, I'm not lost. But I think a number of other people might be.
