Seven San Francisco cops suspended over ‘White Power’ text messages

Source: Reuters

Seven San Francisco police officers linked to a scandal over racist and homophobic text messages were suspended with the recommendation they be fired, Chief Greg Suhr said on Friday.

In all, a department investigation revealed wrongdoing by 14 members of the police department – who may be disciplined in various ways from suspension without pay to termination, the chief said.

“There is also no place in the SFPD for any officer capable of the thinking expressed in these hateful text messages,” Suhr said in a statement.

“The officers responsible for the reprehensible texts should be separated from the SFPD as soon as practical. The fine, right-minded men and women of the SFPD that are of the impeccable character required of a Guardian (police officer) expect no less,” he said.

In the past 20 years I have not had a single positive interaction with SFPD.
I'm pretty much a text book middle aged, middle class male, I don't look or act like anything but a "good citizen". Every time an SF cop has found out I'm from Oakland every single one of them has spewed an shower of racists code words about "that hell hole" and "those people" and the standard statement also from lots of middle class white folk from SF "how can you stand to live in a place like that". I've seen SFPD hit 80 year old men with their sticks for asking them for directions. I've been told to "fuck off" a number of times by SFPD cops when I've tried to ask them simple questions. My list of shitty racist interaction with SF's boys in blue is way more lengthy, fortunately for me I have mostly been an observer.

Good luck cleaning up the force. Having a legacy chief in place will probably do the trick - yeah I'm being sarcastic.

because we know this is not limited to San Francisco. Once a police officer has been terminated they should not be allowed to woerk in that field, ANYWHERE, EVER AGAIN.
The way it is now, if anyone does get fired they will end up somewhere else. Like Office Wilson of Ferguson, hadn't he been fired from someplace else? I know this would be hard to implement but it could be done...............
