There's a visible police presence at the University of Colorado this morning as administrators roll out their well-publicized attempt to snuff out the annual 4/20 smoke-out, shutting down Norlin Quad entirely and checking IDs of students and employees.
....
Around 6:30 a.m., campus workers began applying fish-based fertilizer to Norlin Quad as a deterrent to would-be gatherers -- and it's already working. One student who was about to cross the quad stopped in her tracks, saying, "Oh, that smells disgusting. Never mind." She turned and walked in the other direction.
....
CU plans to have officers at every major pedestrian and vehicle entrance to the university checking IDs. Students and employees will be granted access, but anyone without Buff OneCards will be "cordially" told the campus is closed, according to CU police spokesman Ryan Huff.
....
CU officials have not fenced off Norlin Quad, which has been the site of the smoke-out for the last few years. The large grassy field had a patrol car parked at each corner early this morning, but by a little after 7 a.m., they were gone. There are signs warning that the area is closed and "violators are subject to criminal prosecution."

Sounds like overkill, a little?
Don't miss the comments, especially the great one from "colorado 420" that starts out:
"Pooh-Pooh to the Stoners!" DiStefano was grinch-ish-ly humming. "They're finding out now that no 4/20 is coming!" "They're just waking up! I know just what they'll do!" "Their mouths will hang open a minute or two. Then the Stoners down in Boulder will all cry Boo-Hoo!"
Edited, in lots of places, to replace " with "

it's another GOP power move like what happens all over the country.

(9,090 posts)no uni can justify endorsing RW radio- makes their mission statement a joke all unis need to get off partisan talk radio of any kind, IMO

(51,299 posts)This is so stupid. I WAY prefer being around a stoner than a drunk--or God forbid--a tweaker. Hell, if I was a cop I'd want all college kids to stay stoned. Then they'd just stay home and eat Doritos. No crime!

But hey it's okay for alcohol, firearms and tobacco - they are all legal and dangerous ways to get high.
So sad.

(6,960 posts)CU is concerned about its image ... the traditional 4/20 protest is just too much now for 'business oriented' administration.
But then what do you expect from CU's own 'Il Duce' --- the $400,000 a year chancellor Philip P. DiStefano.
Oh, by the way, CU students ... make sure and thank DiStefano and the Regents for the 5 percent increase in your tuition next year; that will help pay for the extra campus cops, the fish fertilizer and, of course, the multi-hundred thousand dollar salaries of the top administrators.
