North Korea Says It Will Abandon Deal With U.S.

Source: NY Times

North Korea said on Tuesday that it was abandoning an agreement it made in February with the United States, in which it promised to suspend uranium enrichment, nuclear tests and long-range missile tests.

The North Korean Foreign Ministry said that it “resolutely and totally” rejected the United Nations Security Council’s condemnation of its failed rocket launching last week, and that it would continue to launch rockets to try to place satellites into orbit.

The ministry’s statement hinted, but did not make clear, that the North may now conduct a long-range missile or nuclear test.

No longer bound by the deal, “we have thus become able to take necessary retaliatory measures,” the ministry said in the statement, which was carried by the state-run Korean Central News Agency. “The U.S. will be held wholly accountable for all the ensuing consequences.”

I am not saying invade them mind you nor would I support such a thing at this time because I suspect China will step on them hard if they get to out of line however we should stop pretending that the N Korean leadership will be rational and stop trying to negotiate with them.

An invasion should still be off the books imo unless N Korea does something even stupider like say launches a nuke or threatens to, hopefully they wont be that stupid though.
But anyway we should just let them stew, no more offers of aid or anything because its clearly been a waste of time and resources.

Anything that travels over land into North Korea has to go through China. Anything that North Korea exports over land to gain foreign exchange (coal, lumber, magnesite, etc.) has to go through China.

The attack dog maybe be rabidly insane, but China knows how to keep them on a short leash. Remember when they said no more railroad cars on loan; if you want something, send us an empty railroad car first, then we will ship you a filled one. That put a lid on their growth business of salvaging someone else's railroad cars for scrap metal.

They are violent children isolating themselves in the timeout corner. Eventually they will force adults to deal with their escalating tantrums something no one really wants to do. Negative behavior is the only way they can get attention. They need medication.

6. Is that a declaration of war? I'm not sure what kinds of agreements we have.

But, in case N. Korea does not know this, if you rescind your agreement, you have no agreement left, and both sides are free to do what they want. That could work out very badly for N. Korea, and the US would not be blamed. Breaking an agreement without an effort to renegotiate is a serious matter.

I doubt, however, that North Korea takes its international agreements very seriously.

Not that I don't think he's batshit crazy, but I have the feeling now more than ever that the nation is completely run by the military and Kim is nothing more than a glorified ribbon cutter.

and we'll abandon all aid to your country permanently and work on getting the rest of the world to do the same.

You can't even keep the street lights going or feed your people (I've seen reports that even the army is going hungry, that's a bad sign).

So knock yourself out. Maybe you'll even get one hiroshima grade nuke and string together enough model-rocket engines to move it somewhere.

I doubt it though.
