Dueling Alabama Democrats continue to battle in court

A court hearing was canceled today by a Montgomery County Circuit Court judge after one faction of the Alabama Democratic Party requested earlier in the day that the Alabama State Supreme Court be allowed to hear an appeal that could ultimately determine the fate of the party’s leadership.

The hearing scheduled for 2 p.m. today before Judge Greg Griffin was canceled and has not been rescheduled after the defendants in the case filed the motion to cancel it.

The defendants in the case include state Rep. Chris England and 11 other members of the State Democratic Executive Committee (SDEC) who are seeking change within the state party’s power structure. The lawsuit was filed recently by Nancy Worley, long-time chair of the state party, trying to block the reformers’ moves to change party by-laws and elect new officers.

Defendants have asked Griffin to recuse himself from the case, citing conflicts of interest and close relationships with the faction of the Alabama Democratic Party that includes Joe Reed, the longtime chair of the Democratic Party’s black caucus.
