State rep offers anti-Mason resolution, causing turmoil

In a highly unusual debate Thursday morning, the Alabama House of Representatives came close to taking a vote on a resolution condemning Rebekah Mason, whose alleged relationship with former Gov. Robert Bentley triggered a chain of events that led to his plea to misdemeanor charges and resignation from office last week.

The resolution from Rep. Johnny Mack Morrow, D-Red Bay, would represent an almost unique instance of the Alabama Legislature condemning an individual, and sparked consternation from House leaders and members.

“I don’t understand the ramifications of the Legislature condemning a private citizen,” said Rep. Phil Williams, R-Huntsville.

Bobby Segall, an attorney for Mason, said in an email Thursday morning he did not know about the resolution and said he had no comment.
