Paul Ryan might leave Congress in 2018. Why do you suppose that is?

https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2017/12/14/paul-ryan-retire-speaker-ready-leave-washington-216103

Despite several landmark legislative wins this year, and a better-than-expected relationship with President Donald Trump, Ryan has made it known to some of his closest confidants that this will be his final term as speaker. He consults a small crew of family, friends and staff for career advice, and is always cautious not to telegraph his political maneuvers. But the expectation of his impending departure has escaped the hushed confines of Ryan’s inner circle and permeated the upper-most echelons of the GOP. In recent interviews with three dozen people who know the speaker—fellow lawmakers, congressional and administration aides, conservative intellectuals and Republican lobbyists—not a single person believed Ryan will stay in Congress past 2018.

14. I wonder if Mitt Romney is whispering in his ear

There is no love lost between Romney and Trump, and Romney is looking likely to end up in the Senate. I think he sees Ryan as solid Presidential material that he could influence.

12. I think he wants to be President

..and I think the Bush/Romney wing of the party want to get the party back from the Bannon wing. They see Ryan as a smart, youngish white guy that could do that.

The problem with President Ryan is that he is an invertebrate, and the Presidency requires some spine.

6. He will either get his tax cuts by 2018 or he won't

In either case, his very purpose for being will no longer be relevant, and he will be free to spend the rest of his existence writing wonky papers about elevating Ayn Rand to sainthood.

11. If he IS leaving

Besides the previously mentioned “other” (indictment, quitting before he gets indicted, etc.), there’s the possibility the crazy little Eddie Munster motherfucker wants to focus on primaryong Trump and running for president. As the “moderate.” Because that’s what the Falwells and Mercers and Thiels have given us: a world in which Paul Ryan could conceivably sell himself as a moderate and not be laughed out of the press briefing.
