Congratulations Doug Jones!!! Congratulations People of Alabama!
I have to say. I expected Jones to lose. With the election of Trump and the normalization of bigotry and hate, I was expecting Roy Moore to win by a landslide, since it always seemed that the more repulsive a Republican acted, the better he did. It was not enough to engage in harassment, but Republicans had to attack and slut shame your accusers, as well as attack the media.
I was getting ready to come to terms with the idea that neo-nazis were the new normal, and that basic decency and appeals to reason were an act of resistance. I was about to accept the new American paradigm championed by Trump that he and the right offered millions of American freedom from the tyranny of thought and reason.
But, the election of Jones, and more importantly the defeat of Bigoted Child Molester shows that there is silver lining of hope. It also shows just how hard we have to work to win.
I contributed to the Jones campaign, not because I thought he was going to win, but because I would not be able to look myself in the mirror if I stood silent and on the sidelines as a man who perverts the very Christians beliefs he claims to uphold advanced unopposed toward victory. Yes, Roy Moore might have won, but it would not be because i stood silent.
So, congratulations all DUers who also supported Doug Jones. It is because of you and your efforts that I have hope that the inexorable march towards ignorance and hate under Trump might be stopped.
