Gingrich defends Franken: 'This is purely and simply hysteria'

Former Speaker (R-Ga.) on Sunday came to Sen. Al Franken's defense, saying the calls for the Minnesota Democrat to resign from Congress were “purely and simply hysteria.”

“He's never faced his accusers. He's never had due process. He's never had an opportunity to clear his name,” Gingrich told “Fox News Sunday” when asked why the calls for Franken to step aside were "a lynching."

15. I like the corollary argument

We asked one of ours to leave over a seemingly minor transgression(s) while they fulsomely support a man who lured a fourteen year old girl to his lair in the woods, laid out a blanket on the floor, cajoled her to strip to her underwear as he stripped to his, and forced her to touch his erect penis as she recoiled.

I assure you that story will make any non-Deplorable blanch.

We are the party that defends the right of everybody including children.

I couldn't care less what Gingrich has to say about anything. I will proudly cast my lot with the 2/3 of Americans who aren't like him, i.e Deplorables

45. Look, you are right.....

..I probably shouldn't have been so snarky.

And whether you believe it or not it wasn't intended nearly as much as a dig against you as it is the complete hypocrisy and delusion of the Republicans and their moral depravity. I'm laughing more at the idea that any of them could possibly be self aware enough to think in the way that you are optimistically giving them credit for.

I'm all for optimism but we are talking about a group of people that have shown their ability to justify anything in the name of their own partisanship and tribalism knows no depths. There's just zero evidence anywhere that any of the people who we would all categorize as deplorables will have even seconds of doubt that cause them to go "Oh shit. They ousted Franken and Conyers. We are fucked now. We'll have no choice but to confront the predators that we are electing and supporting!"

And if Trump's polls were in the mid 40's or something I would agree that maybe we'd be at this point peeling off some independents with our moral high ground. But with his numbers and the GOP's numbers where they are, there's nobody left to peel off. His only base off support is that dead end 35% who will support the GOP no matter what they do and will never, ever in a million years support a Democrat for anything. So all we've really done is embolden them and dishearten a lot of the people on our side.

So.....yeah, we probably still disagree but more in terms of our level of optimism. I apologize for my snark.

47. Approximately

Approximately 2/3 of Americans aren't Deplorables which I define as stalwart Chump supporters. Obviously they aren't all Democrats or we would crush the GOP at the polls. My raison d'etre is to get as many of those 2/3 to vote for the Democrat at every level. I want every one of those 2/3 to come to the conclusion we are the good guys and gals.

Oh, I have no animus toward Al Franken. I liked him enough to read some of his books. I have no strong conviction on how his situation should have been resolved. However given the environment we are in I'm not remotely surprised by the resolution.

10. Tactically at this point, its in the RW's interest to think so

On the one hand they have to justify having elected a president with far worse allegations against him. If they can make such "misbehavior" a normal thing that we should all accept and live with, its good for them in many ways.

On the other hand, at the moment a number of well-respected Democrats took the position that Franken should resign. Some people in the party think that was right, some people think it wasn't. The ones who think it wasn't (if this site is any indication) are angry enough to talk third party, and throw the rest of party under the bus in anger. If the republicans can keep fanning the flames here it draws attention from their own mess, and splitting our own party is a good move going into 2018.

20. Just getting people to stay home has been effective enough

The list of potential Democrats that other Democrats hate just keeps getting longer. Having watched the last few years, how many Democrats hated Obama, and how many hated Hillary, how many hate Kamala Harris (I don't recall why at the moment) and now how many hate Gillibrand or anyone involved in Franken's departure...

I've never looked at things that way - its not people that get me to the poles, its issues. And I don't hate anyone.

to blaming the MeToo movement and any women who accuse men of doing nasty things. That plays right into tRump's tiny hands dealing with his accusers. Dismiss the victim's stories as not credible. And this is coming at the beginning of the Zervos lawsuit.

I'm calling this one. It's about to go down. Another twisting of reality by RW logic.

Franken is the poster child for the point they wanted to prove and all they had to do is set him up and let the democrats walk into the trap. Now because of what happened with Franken the Republicans have justified protecting Moore and Trump.

29. Of course he did.

The Republicans are extremely adept at causing the Democrats to ultimately turn every weapon against themselves.

Had no one called for Franken's resignation, Newt would be using that as evidence that the Democrats are hypocrites that don't take sexual misconduct seriously.

We were going to face a fight either way - the difference being that had we stood by Franken instead of throwing him under the bus, we would still have an exemplary senator in office, instead of being less one strong warrior as we engaged the inevitable battle.

But no, we had to pick one over the other, and the Republicans were ready & waiting.

he wants to sew FURTHER division among Democrats. He couldn't give two shits about Franken and the moral dilemma that confronts the party. He's ONLY trying to weaken the Democratic Party. It's also an old Russia tactic, but I'm sure Newt thought of this himself. He's a sleeze-bag who competes with Roger Stone as a master of provocation.
