This country ranks No. 1 for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness (its not America)Norway ranked the No. 1 place for happiness and personal freedom, according to an analysis of three separate studies on life expectancy by the World Bank, on civil liberties from Freedom House, a New York-based nonprofit that conducts research on advocacy and democracy, on happiness from the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), a group linked to the United Nations, and on rule of law from the World Justice Project, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit.

The U.S. has seen its happiness slide happiness over the last decade. In 2007, it ranked No. 3 among the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development countries. Last year, it was 19th, down from 13th the year before. The predominant political discourse in the United States is aimed at raising economic growth, with the goal of restoring the American Dream and the happiness that is supposed to accompany it. But the data show conclusively that this is the wrong approach, the report concluded.
For those interviewed in the report, perception is reality. At least, as far as their happiness is concerned and, experts say, the divisive political climate likely hasnt helped. The United States can and should raise happiness by addressing Americas multi-faceted social crisis rising inequality, corruption, isolation, and distrust rather than focusing exclusively or even mainly on economic growth, especially since the concrete proposals along these lines would exacerbate rather than ameliorate the deepening social crisis, the report said.
...
The U.S showed less social support, less sense of personal freedom, lower donations, and more perceived corruption of government and business, it said. Americas crisis is, in short, a social crisis, not an economic crisis Almost all of the policy discourse in Washington, D.C. centers on naïve attempts to raise the economic growth rate, as if a higher growth rate would somehow heal the deepening divisions and angst in American society. This kind of growth-only agenda is doubly wrong-headed.

To be clear, my comment was that I thought Denmark was #1 from the title, but it was Norway. Hence, was close.
The US has a long, long way to go.

(14,569 posts)It was a cold, scary feeling knowing Obama, whom I'd come to love, would be leaving the White House and the disgusting bigot-misogynist Trump moving in.
You could feel the hate in the air. It was almost palpable, a lurking, greasy presence that left us all feeling dirty.
That day, and certainly these subsequent months, reminded me of Stephen King's Gunslinger.
It feels as if the world we knew has moved on, and Trump's MAGA crowd a group of 'breakers' who are systematically destroying the beams that hold our world together.
Who knew someone could be so prescient?
There is one cheerful thought here, though. I went to a regular Noetic Sciences group I attend, and we were talking about the utter criminality of these Republicans. One member of the group said the next president could well be a woman. Consider, she said, if we can win the House back in 2018, and Trump/Pence both go down for treason, money laundering, obstruction of justice, rape or any of the dozens of other charges I'm sure they could be brought up on.
Well, if both the president and VP go down to impeachment and are removed, then the next 'up' is the Speaker of the House - Nancy Pelosi!
Isn't that a fun thought? She'd be such a breath of fresh air after Trump. Well, hell, a fart is a breath of fresh air next to Trump, but you know what I mean. Pelosi would be fine. Maybe we could begin regaining our sense of respect and pride, and healing the massive mess Trump and his minions have already made of things.

(5,275 posts)The Scandinavian Nations are so far ahead of us in so many ways. Ways like income equality, work customs, education, you name it. In elections the person with the most votes wins every time. And on and on.
We have in the White House a disaster who got elected over his opponent who had 3 million more votes. Only in America.

(19,192 posts)there was an article about the rapidly growing problem of fascism in European countries. Apparently Norway has a very strong Neo-Nazi problem growing by leaps and bounds. I wonder how long they'll hold on the number one position? Fascism is a growing problem all over Europe, much as it is in the United States, and the number one reason given for it's rise is the enormous number of refugees seeking asylum from tyrannical governments. There is no Utopia on earth, anywhere.
