General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWeve been evacuated from our new home due to massive Ventura CA fire
Keep a good thought for all those in its path as it is explosive and wind driven. We had so little warning due to power outage I thought I heard voices in the street and went out to see red and blue flashing lights. Couldnt make out what they were saying so flagged down a passing car and heard mandatory evacuation. Looked at hill in back of house and saw entire sky was red. Crap. Wish Id had more notice, but I woke hubby, leashed doggy, grabbed our medicine and headed for our inlaws.
This is the real deal we have our two elderly cars and the clothes we stand up in. The Santa Ana winds are howling outside. Well, I also have my purse and cellphone, and can charge the cell in my car.
Tomorrow we find out what happens to our home overnight but now its after 2am and I need to sleep and also dont want to drain the battery anymore
Thank you my friends for being here. Ill check in when I can.

By the way, if you're looking to make a charitable contribution that will help fire victims in a concrete way, consider making a donation to Children's Disaster Services, trained volunteers who go to disaster relief centers, and set up certified child care areas while Mom and Dad negotiate with the various relief agencies. All the details are here:

Having to leave like that shows one what their priorities in life are. I grabbed dog food and left jewelry behind, which was stupid because I can just buy some dog food. But I'm content with worrying about my dogs before anything else.
Hoping every thing turns out alright for you.

I hope that your home is spared the flames.
But if it isn't, just know that you have a community of people who are going through the same thing and will support you. Better yet, YOU will be the support for your neighbors whether or not you lose your home.
We are only two months out from losing our house, but are already making plans to rebuild and improve upon the new one. When life gives you lemons, don't just settle for lemonade. Make a whole batch of lemon vanilla martinis!

I think my home is gone, but wont know for days. We are so lucky to live close to my husbands brother and wifehes our Realtor, as it happens. We are staying with them, but as they are also close to the fire we could all have to leave if these awful winds shift. I told my SIL to remember that if they have to leave they now have four cars they can fill, ours and theirs.
We just moved here at the end of summer and this is my died and gone to heaven house at age 70. But when I heard that a mobile home park had been destroyed all I could think of was that these are peoples homes too.

While my daughter was going to school on the Big Island, we visited where Kilauea's lava flow had headed straight toward someone's house, and the guy living in it had evacuated. He came back days later to find that the lava flow had miraculously parted before incinerating the house, and spared it completely. He was still advised not to move back in just yet, but it sure seemed that some ancestor of his must have done Madame Pele an enormous favor at one time.

(31,809 posts)I just read there is now a fire so close to the 405 that it's been closed near Mulholland.
From a NY Times article:
The authorities closed the northbound lanes of the interstate, one of the major links between the bulk of the city and the San Fernando Valley, and ordered the evacuation of the area just east of the freeway, from Sunset Boulevard to Mulholland Drive a distance of almost four miles.
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/06/us/california-fires.html
I have a friend from college who lives in that area east of the freeway--not far from the UCLA campus where we went to school. I am going to try and get in touch with her.

(58,785 posts)an asset for you, at least to some degree.
Our old home, a nice old California bungalow, is right now about a quarter mile as fire flies from the Creek Fire's mandatory evacuation zone. Our 1/10 acre level area lot was cut into the side of a mountain on a street of homes on similar lots (full of kids, wonderful Halloween neighborhood). It's not that I didn't look at the mountains surrounding us and think it couldn't happen to us, only that fire would have to sweep across a couple hundred homes to get to us, and in those days it seemed very unlikely that it wouldn't be stopped before then.
Read that the Ventura County fire at some points was advancing an acre a second. Still hard to imagine, but I'm very glad to hear you're safe with family and the dogs are having fun.
Hekate
(93,947 posts)After presenting our ID to prove residency, we were initially told to hike in and out, a mile and a half each way, but someone drove by and offered us a ride. She was a neighbor doing shuttle service, because her car was left behind when she evacuated. As long as she didn't go past the barricades she could just keep looping around the valley. As we started examining the yard for hotspots someone else drove by and said the cops were allowing cars in and offered to drive hubby down the hill.
I basically packed what I would have the other night if given some notice: clothes, toiletries, jewelry, dog food... Checkbook.
The inside of the house is FINE, but stinks badly of smoke. Water is on (the entire town must boil it, though) but electricity is not. Some neighbors are staying the night, but not us. High winds are expected tonight, with gusts up to 80 mph in some areas.
In the early adternoon the sun slanting in turned orange. The smoke turned back and filled the valley. We finished filling the station wagon and left.
As to the neighborhood, only one house is gone -- down to the melted steel girders. A lot of landscaping is crispy. The barranca out back burned, all the leaves under the oak are gone.
We are enclosed by hills, and they are absolutely black from top to bottom. The fire encroached on every property. We have been so lucky so far.

(58,785 posts)sweeping down both sides of the mountain range between "beautiful downtown Burbank" and the area where we lived. 100,000 people at last report still evacuated there. Just read about the scary nighttime emergency evacuation of lion, tigers, hyenas and other animals, many dangerous to man, from Wildlife Waystation in the mountains above Tujunga. They got all away safely, animals and those who love them.
I worry about the beautiful native Theodore Payne Foundation gardens I once loved to hike, but if they burn they will come back to show why the foundation recommends native plants for landscaping in areas of high fire danger.
Which is all of LA, of course, but especially the mountains so many love to live in, but perhaps should reconsider now that climate change extremes are upon us. I appraised in so many neighborhoods in both counties, and others, that are burning tonight.
LA County fire chief, and no doubt Ventura County's as well, recommends "sleeping" with one eye open tonight. Winds up to 80 mph expected.
Edited to remove report of deaths picked up from twitter discussion. As of this morning, ABC says that have been no deaths so far. 110,000 still under mandatory evacuation order in this area alone.
Take care.
