There is a 10 year maximum as to how long you can serve.

I guess they could appoint Dan Quayle. Which, ironically enough, mean that if he became president we would have a smarter man in the Oval Office.

25 years ago nobody would even believe that a Vice-President Quayle ascending to the presidency could mean a smarter president moving forward.

83. No, it's not phrased as a 10 year maximum
Fri Dec 1, 2017, 07:05 PM
Dec 2017

The 22nd Amendment says:

No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.

The only restriction is on being elected as President. In principle, if Pence resigned, Trump could nominate George W. Bush as VP. If Bush is confirmed by Congress and Trump then leaves office, Bush would server the remainder of the term as President.

(It would arguably violate the spirit of the 22nd Amendment, which was written before there was a mechanism to replace a Vice President. That alone would likely make confirmation by Congress difficult.)

Thanks for the details here. Not enough of us drill down into things for a fuller understanding. Especially when time and personal pressures (and priorities) draw many of us away. I always appreciate it when somebody brings little background factoids and such to a post here. You can learn a lot, that way.

Appreciations here to all the DUers who do the research and find the links! Sometimes it's like taking a master class around here.

Sat Dec 2, 2017, 12:19 PM
Dec 2017

In fact, Gore may have been the first of many Democrats who served honorably in Vietnam who had their service minimized as not enough. In his case, it was that he was in a non combat position and that he was in Vietnam less than a year - implying he pulled strings to return early rather than the truth, he served state side first and had less than a year left when he went to Vietnam. https://www.snopes.com/politics/military/gorevietnam.asp There is the Snopes - note that even on this, there are comments that argue that he was exaggerating in his campaign - just because of pictures shown. (Note the similarity to the way the RW lied on both Kerry and even Cleland AND how the media would not openly call these entire smear operations lies.)

Note that the Democrat was not compared to his opponent, but to some mythical ideal - and where the Democrat came close - like with the events that led to Kerry's two prestigious medals - they claimed the NAVY's account was a lie and written by the nominee (because the military always lets 26 year old junior officers to do so )

They would go with a rabid Hyper-Christian Fundamentalist to excite the base and prevent the pResident from being tossed out. The alternative being so distasteful -impeachment of the current pResident is off the table.

Let's say a Ted Cruz or a Roy Moore, or Tony Perkins, or Jerry L. Falwell Jr. of Liberty University - these types would shield the standing pResident from impeachment.

It is like George Herbert Walker Bush picking the dummy Quayle for VP. This was Poppy's insurance policy against impeachment or possible assassination. The dummy Dan in the Oval Office was a horror thought, and gave Poppy breathing space.

Think of the worst person in DC except trump.
That's who he'll pick if Pence bails.

Has to be someone who isn't on the indictment list nor involved with Trump/Putin crimes. It has to be someone who will be able to pardon them.

If Pence resigns, his replacement will be some horror of a conservative Republican who will be at least as bad as Pence.

Found a good read from 6/2017.

Apparantly Rep Elijah Cummings warned VP Mike Pence about Gen Flynn, but his warnings were ignored.
This may be why.
Brother Ed Pence & Russia

Is Cummins VP Pence’s Motive for Ignoring US Congressman Cummings’ Warning Re Flynn?

Cummins Engines Literally Moves Russia, Including Military; Partners With KAMAZ Owned By Russian Gov Owned-Sanctioned Entities Rostec & Sberbank

Pence gives Putin brophile a new meaning and takes Russiaphilia to a whole new level.
It gives VP Pence MOTIVE for ignoring US Congressman Cummings’ warning, last November, re Flynn. Cummins is deeply involved in Russia through sales and joint ventures.

Up until at least last year, Cummins engines have been used in the GAZ Tiger vehicles, used by Russian, Syrian and other military.

And the issue appearing here again, is Russian Sanctions

Do you remember what happened when Agnew resigned during the Nixon administration?

"Under the process decreed by the 25th Amendment to the Constitution, President Nixon was instructed to the fill vacant office of vice president by nominating a candidate who then had to be approved by both houses of Congress. Nixon’s appointment of Representative Gerald Ford of Michigan was approved by Congress and, on December 6, Ford was sworn in. He became the 38th president of the United States on August 9, 1974, after the escalating Watergate affair caused Nixon to resign.

Try building a party instead. We built a party leading up to 2008 and it wasn't built out of charisma. We then let it fall apart from 2010 on

The world landscape is littered with the misery left behind from charismatic leaders. When you rely upon charisma, you have given up on democracy-you are seeking the strong man.

PS We had an uncharismatic candidate who won the election despite the fat that our lack of party unity left us completely blindsided by Russian propaganda and other interference--so blindsided that some even now want to ignore the facts.

An important precondition for winning a war is: facing the fact that you are in one.

Ryan wants someone else to be the lame duck like Ford was and lose in 2020. He is hoping he can be like Reagan and win in 2024.

Ryan would decline appointment to the VP slot, but would be forced into the Presidency if P & T go simultaneously. Then he can't resign that presidency because he'd never live down the "quitter" rap.

Then we get a lame duck Ryan, who will be eventually be taken down when Mueller reveals the extent that Russian oligarchs are funding the Repug party.

Twitter seems to be full of citizen "journalists" who have a lot of "sources." I wouldn't get your hopes up unless a more reputable source says something, and includes actual evidence.

isn't real without a single source.

This is the same exact 'tactic' Russian bots used to pollute our election. 20% of tweets were fake news, faked fancy graphics tweeted by just created fake accounts.

Plenty of deplorable picked up those fake bot-tweets, (like the pizza-gate lies) and re-tweeted them. Even the republican running for president was 'fooled' and used fake-bot tweets in his re-tweets. Because he liked the messages in those bot-accounts.

We Ds may like 'the message' that Pence will quit- but sorry it's just NOT TRUE without a BASIC SOURCE. We are a country of Laws. To get rid of trump he has to be impeached. Push for reality, please.

Twitters a cesspool of fake stuff, a con-mans playground. Very much like a Religion, one "believes" because why? ask "why" please.

Just believing something a person says without any source & 'joining that team, jumping on that bandwagon/cult is similar to what got millions of people slaughtered/enslaved/locked out- over history.

and fear he will be the damn POTUS before we rout him in 2020, that's not to say I don't think Trump needs to go, just Pence is protected by the etablishment in a way Trump can never be and you wonder if he wasn't insurance against Trump in the first place.

create a perception of distance from the Trump circle. Mueller's investigation will find that Pence is just as compromised as everybody else who is close to Trump. So is Ryan worse?

185. I would imagine Pence resigning ONLY if Mueller has solid cause to charge him and offers that
Sat Dec 2, 2017, 12:47 PM
Dec 2017

as the cost of no charges. Note this is a case where we are assuming that Mueller will at that point have evidence to take down Pence. Consider 2 possibilities: 1) He knows that Trump himself is very very vulnerable. Note that by stepping down at that point, he would be giving up a very real chance to be President. 2) He views Trump as likely to survive as he was protected from any direct illegal action AND as postulated above Mueller does have a solid case on Pence.

I suspect that IF Pence is in danger, Trump is too - as he is reckless and he had a very chaotic inexperienced team that would not have had the sense to insure that nothing tracked back to Trump. So, we would most likely be in possibility 1. The choice for him - risk trial, conviction and jail by not making a deal OR taking a deal where he steps down agreeing to some minor charge with no prison time.

If that happened, President Trump is the one who would nominate someone and the Senate would have to confirm him or her. Assuming this happens in 2018, that would be a Senate with either 51 or 52 Republicans. Confirmation would place some constraint on the choice - but as we saw yesterday and in the Obama years, it might not be a significant constraint. Nixon picked the House Minority Leader, Gerald Ford, who was a pretty bland, non controversial choice. However, where Nixon was a criminal (worse than we knew at that time given that he blew up the 1968 peace negotiations just to win election), he also had a rational, functional side that Trump may not have.

Given that Trump has to pick, I assume we can eliminate anyone he sees as having criticized him - which eliminates almost all serious Republicans - like Romney, Jebb, Corker etc might be eliminated by Trump. This might be too simplistic as he now appears to be BFF with Lindsey Graham, who was one of the toughest critics early on in the primaries. One of the many things that are weird about Trump is we do not know whether he really has an ideological value. If you look at the choices he has made for the cabinet, he has found people the Senate confirmed. At that point, we are at a crisis point - as we were when Nixon picked Ford. There would be a major effort to get someone who could help the country move forward.

196. Only if Trump resigns at the same time
Sat Dec 2, 2017, 03:20 PM
Dec 2017

If Pence goes first, Trump picks the new VP (as with Nixon picking Ford after Agnew resigned). When Agnew resigned, the Speaker of the House was a Democrat, so Nixon moved quickly to name a new VP. He settled on Ford as the least controversial (and certainly not the first preference) of his possible choices. At that point, Nixon didn't see himself resigning yet over Watergate. When he did resign, Ford became President, and moved to nominate another Republican for his VP. Ford no doubt enraged the rapidly rightward-radicalizing Republicans by picking the most flamboyant moderate Republican around, NY Governor Nelson Rockefeller, who had no trouble sailing through to confirmation (52 Democratic Senators and 36 Republican Senators voting to confirm). Again, this made sure the Democratic Speaker of the House had no chance of directly succeeding to the presidency. Ford remained the only president that never got there through a presidential election.

Turtle is a butt breathing piece of shit, but Majority Leader of the Senate is not in the Order of Succession. Orrin Hatch is the President Pro Tem of the Senate and would ascend to the Presidency in this scenario, assuming there were no appointments from Pence on down.

No. Office Current officer
