Alabama pastors turn on Roy Moore after he's caught faking endorsement letter

Alabama pastors turn on Roy Moore after he’s caught faking endorsement letter
Religion is a massively important part of Alabama politics, and of Roy Moore’s campaign for Senate. But some of the pastors he claims endorse him now deny they did.
By Matthew Chapman NOVEMBER 14, 2017

Much attention has been given to the fact that even in the wake of Roy Moore’s pedophilia accusations, the religious right — a dominant political force in Alabama — remains steadfastly loyal to him. And polls have indeed shown that white, conservative evangelical support for him is still disturbingly high.

However, Moore’s support within religious communities is not quite as strong as he has touted. In fact, it turns out that he and his wife may be lying about having the endorsement of several pastors and churches.

On Sunday, Moore’s wife, Kayla, published an endorsement letter from over 50 pastors to her Facebook page, which fiercely defended Moore from the child molestation scandal:

But less than a day after the letter was published, it was revealed that this was simply a copy of a letter posted to Moore’s campaign website during the Senate primary, before he was accused of being a pedophile — with three new sentences deceptively added to make it look like it was about the general election.

2. Might want to check in with your husband, Kayla

He's real big on the Ten Commandments, and it sounds a lot like you were bearing false witness by re-publishing that letter on your Facebook page. Is that what you and Roy consider to be honoring your faith? If it does, I'd have to say that you and I read the Bible very differently.

Similar ideas in the fundie baptist church I grew up in. I knew a TON of dishonest deacons and laymen.

I regularly refuse to do business with anyone that uses the fish symbol in their advertising. I assume they are crooks. I'm sure I'm wrong sometimes but I'm not losing sleep over it.

I've only not been paid twice, once by a religious business and once by a republican.

Evidence presented in this list establishes that when the church or its leaders needed protection, it was, and is, okay to fib, deceive, distort, inflate, minimize, exaggerate, prevaricate or lie. You will read quotations by church leaders who admitted that deception is a useful tool to protect the church and its leaders "when they are in a tight spot," or "to beat the devil at his own game." They admit engaging in moral gymnastics; that God approves of deception ? if it's done to protect the "Lord's Church" or "the brethren."

mormons yes, and catholic as well.

I don't delude myself that I am qualified to run for high office, so I can't seriously understand why someone with this much baggage, who's been ejected from office twice, and who will do nothing but shame the office even wants to be a Senator. He doesn't even seem to really believe in government, certainly not one that is separate from the church. I don't get it.

Two times Moore got kicked off the Bench. The Senate seat opened up when Sessions took the AG position. Importantly, Moore saw Trump-- a fellow moron and abuser of females-- get elected.

Moore probably thought, "Hey, I could do that, too!"

Trump and Moore: idiots.

The 17th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution changed that state legislative elections to popular elections. The dearth of qualified candidates from some states reminds me of the cronyism the earlier elections invited. Here is a link to the Wikipedia, which seems to cover that part of U.S. history:

or psychopath after adding that statement from a former professor about his behavior in a college law class to everything else. They often choose work that allows them to maliciously manipulate people.

Presenting himself as a deeply religious politician offers a two-fer, and the more powerful the more powerful. And it's not at all uncommon for people who present themselves as blatantly devout believers to somehow feel they need not adhere to religious doctrine and routinely violate it. A special category of people, but well recognized.

I had a hard time believing that 50 pastors ran to his defense immediately after the allegations. It seemed pretty reckless.

Not saying they wouldn't support him but usually they tend to get the pulse of their congregations before sticking their necks way out like that.

...this was deliberate. And this is the systemic problem I have always had with Republicans. I've been observing their antics for decades now and it's been clear for some time these people will lie, and lie, and lie with neither shame nor hesitation. Whatever helps their side; the ends justifies the means.

Me, I've only pointed to facts I know are real, and if I find out something I thought was true was in fact false I recant it and stop repeating it. Not them. That's the signature hallmark of Republicans:

THEY WILL LIE.

How do these people live with themselves?

Jesus forgives them, every time, so why should they feel guilty? In fact, feeling guilt after Jesus has forgiven you is a sin in itself, because guilt implies that Jesus's forgiveness isn't sufficient, which means you think he hung on that cross for nothing.

1. Roy's wife. (She really wants to get her ass out of Aly-bamy and live in WDC. So many women are pointing at her and saying "Roy raped me when I was 14."
2. Roy's campaign manager. (He really wants Mr. & Mrs. Roy out of Aly-bamy.)
3. Roy (He really needs to get out of Aly-bamy to expand his hunting territory.)
And after those above, all the original pastors that signed the original letter. Including those who now want their names off the fake letter.

Lying about the endorsements as being after the allegations when they were before is the point.

Bearing false witness yet another of the flexible Christian Commandments it seems, especially when there is an election to be had.

I agree the focus of the headline should be on the alteration of the endorsement letter, and misleading release that implied it was written in response to the allegations.

But still, two out of 50 is hardly turning on Moore.

61. No Commandment to protect the children

When I read that in "Three Farmers on their Way to a Dance", by Richard Powers, years ago, I thought about it ever since. I have faith and I know people that don't believe in God of the Bible, will read this, Don't forget that the Bible is a storehouse of some of the earliest Western literature. It helped me to read the Bible as literature, not as religious information. Anyway, I imagine that God in His wisdom thought his human creation had enough sense to protect the fruit of their loins. But our innate sense of survival doesn't keep them safe from evil-not from bullies with guns, not bullies in the schools, not bullies in the churches.

If all humans can't understand that our survival as a species depends on unequivocally protecting our offspring, we are screwed.

81. I read his wife is from the same class as the child he assaulted? He had her post the faked 'letter'

he could be lying to her as well. IMO, his wife and his own 4? kids recently found out Daddys history of mall-banned creep & sexual attacks against children.

I hope they're all ok, IMO the wife & kids are usually the last to know. They could be victims too.
