I live in rural Alabama.

I noticed about a month ago Roy Moore signs were in a few yards as I drove to get groceries. There were about three signs along my route, and they pissed me off each time I saw them. Today, I drove by on my way to the store and every single sign was gone. Now this may mean nothing, as some of the ornery, stubborn folks in my small town (pop. 1200) may have taken the signs in but will vote for him anyway. Who knows. But I thought it was very interesting.

There are three religious truths:

15. Talk up Doug Jones - he's a terrific candidate

You don't have to bad-mouth Roy Moore, he's in deep enough shit as it is. But talk up Doug Jones. Encourage people you know to take a look at him. If your Alabama friends are sensitive to being characterized as a bunch of in-bred hicks and yokels, mention that Doug Jones is one of the good guys. He prosecuted and won convictions of the cowards who bombed the church where those four little girls were killed in 1963.

This is really an easy call: Are you in favor of decency and fairness, or do you want to elevate a child molester against the man who sent murderous cowards to jail?

58. Actually...

Mentioning that he worked that case would probably piss off some white male Alabamans who would have done the bombing themselves. Or knew who did it and were keeping quiet. People don't like it when you bring up the past. It only gives closure to the relatives of the dead girls, and a sense of justice to the black community. It definitely won't win the white Alabama voters.

There have to be other things in his favor that don't bring up black/white issues.

59. Disagree

The bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church was a criminal issue. If some Alabamans still see it as a racial issue, that's on them, and I'd say that the votes of such retrograde racists should be spurned, lest we incur some sort of debt to them. I understand some Alabamans are sensitive to being portrayed as racist fucks; here's a golden opportunity to shed that image.

The holdovers who get pissed off about some cowardly terrorists being brought to justice can just stay pissed off. I'm willing to give the rest of white Alabama a chance to prove to the country that they're not still in thrall to these assholes.

62. Holdovers vote.

The thing I look at is motivation. People have to be motivated to vote for Jones. And the fact that he's a Democrat is a turn-off. I'm not sure that bringing the church bombers to justice is enough of a plus. There's got to be something more in his favor. Or he will lose.

Just sitting on their hands hoping Moore will implode enough?

I went onto their website today and no news, no headlines, just crickets.

The Dems are getting a golden opportunity to take a southern Senate seat. I'll bet you Doug Jones considers himself a Christian. Did Doug have habits of preying on teenage girls too?

This is also a good opportunity to further debate the separation of church and state. Moore wants a fucking theocracy.

27. Doug Jones has never preyed on teenage girls.

In fact, he was the man who put the last man responsible for the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church, which murdered four little girls, in jail. You should apologize for that shameful remark.

16th Street Baptist Church bombing case
Jones prosecuted Thomas Edwin Blanton Jr. and Bobby Frank Cherry, two members of the Ku Klux Klan, for their roles in the 1963 16th Street Baptist Church bombing. The case was reopened the year before Jones was appointed, but did not pick up traction until his appointment. A federal grand jury was called in 1998 which piqued Cherry's ex-wife, Willadean Cherry's, attention and led her to call the FBI to report her testimony. Willadean then introduced Jones to family and friends who reported their own experiences from the time of the bombing. A key piece of evidence was a tape from the time of the bombing in which Blanton stated that he had had to meet up with others to make the bomb. Jones was deputized in order to argue in state court and was able to indict Blanton and Cherry in 2000. Blanton was found guilty in 2001, and Cherry was found guilty in 2002. Blanton was up for parole in 2016, at which Jones spoke in opposition to his potential release. Blanton's parole was denied. Cherry died in prison in 2004.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doug_Jones_(attorney)#16th_Street_Baptist_Church_bombing_case

Doug Jones does not abuse little girls, he fights to give them justice.

37. Dems should be running ads in Alabama....

....saying “If as a Christian you’re disgusted with the behavior of Roy Moore, you can send a clear message to your party by staying home on Election Day. “ As of the latest I heard he is still at 55%,and I do expect him to win. I think that the other Republicans bailing on him are doing so because they also think he will safely win. A write in vote for an acceptable candidate should be encouraged, because it would effectively split the Republican vote; how many Alabama voters can write anyway? Probably not enough to win a write in but enough to make Moore lose.

If Alabama was any worse it would be Mississippi.

49. The DNC has to be very careful...

... how they go about campaigning in Alabama. National democrats can be toxic to the Trump/Moore base voters here. Moore is flailing. Jones is coming off as a reasonable alternative, or at least as “not too bad a guy for a Democrat”. That’s a good place to be right now.

A big push from national Dems with big $ and endorsements? - probably motivate the anti-democrats and be counter productive. (Although the $ is good if it’s not too directly tied to the DNC). Nancy and Hillary really need to not comment too loudly about all of this. Sad that it’s like that, but it is.

...it is a strategy to keep Moore’s base at home watching Wheel of Fortune or whatever, and not voting. If you could get 3% to stay home, there is your Election, and you are really close to flipping the Senate. There are voters who do not like Moore but can’t bring themselves to vote for a Democrat. Give a mouse a hole and he’ll run to it every time.

It's more than possible that they still plan to vote for the cretin but just don't want to advertise the fact. There weren't all that many Shitler yard signs during last year's installation either, but the assclown was still voted into office by the same people that plan to vote for this pedophile child abuser. I fully expect him to win. They need to send out those flyers throughout Alabama and in Washington D.C. that warn the entire population that a pedophile is in their vicinities.
