1. He can then put someone in that doesn't have to recuse himself

with regards to the Russia investigation and then can have the new AG fire Mueller.

It seems likely Mueller will put Sessions under oath. He may have a shred of decency and not be willing to trade his self-respect for a promised pardon.
I think Trump keeps him close so he can appeal to his loyalty.
