was all about how Manafort hadn't been charged with anything relating to the Trump campaign colluding with Russia? Why would he say that? He sounded like he was acting as Trump's lawyer and not Manafort's; he didn't say anything in defense of the crimes Manafort was actually charged with. It was gross legal malpractice - or maybe he's trolling Trump for a pardon.

and afterwards I was thinking that Manafort may want to change lawyers or do what the other guy Gates did and get a public defender (couldn't be any worse).

The statement was too confident to be read any other way.
I would like to know if AGs Herring or Schneiderman have anything on Manafort that would be exempt from a Presidential pardon.
