Preview of Coming Indictments
The charges against George Papadopoulos suggest bigger names are on the way.
By Fred Kaplan
The headline news Monday morning was the indictment of President Trumps former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, on 12 counts of tax fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy. But the bigger story may ultimately lie in the unsealing of charges against a lesser-known figure, a foreign policy adviser on the Trump campaign named George Papadopoulos. The Papadopoulos indictment provides more direct evidence of collusion with the Russian governmentand suggests that more indictments of bigger names are on their way.
Papadopoulos was indicted for making false statements to the FBI about meetings that hed had with Russians. Specifically, he claimed that the meetings occurred before he started working for Trumps campaign when, in fact, they occurred afterward. He said that the Russian in question was a nothing when, in fact, he had (and Papadopoulos understood that he had) substantial connections to Russian government officials. He also neglected to tell the FBI that hed had further contacts with officials from the Russian foreign ministry, who wanted to help, and set up a meeting with, Trumpa message that he conveyed in a meeting with senior campaign officials.
The help these officials were offering, the indictment states, was dirt on Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, including thousands of emails.
If all this doesnt make Trump higher-ups nervous, the indictments final paragraph might do the trick: On July 27, 2017, it states, defendant PAPADOPOULOS was arrested upon his arrival at Dulles International Airport. Following his arrest, defendant PAPADOPOULOS met with the Government on numerous occasions to provide information and answer questions.
The indictment, which also contains a guilty plea signed by the defendant, is dated Oct. 5. In other words, Papadopoulos has been talking with Robert Muellers team for three monthsand it can be surmised hes been turned into a states witness, as part of a plea deal, for at least the past three weeks.
We dont yet know the extent of what Mueller has learned about the Trump campaigns ties with Russia, or where the probe is leading, or how high up it goes. But the revelations of the past year, from news stories and intelligence reports, have suggested that the two main threads involve laundering money and defaming Hillary Clinton for the purpose of boosting Donald Trumps bid for the presidency. Muellers first two indictments provide a taste of bothand a scent of the main courses to come.

(51,582 posts)was expected but the news release of the Papa's confession 90 min later was perfectly planned.
Now people are thinking back and realize that Mueller knew of the Russian meeting and that Jr's "nothing burger"response and his daddy's cover up back then was all BS in JULY (4 months of Papa's emails being read with a Mueller microscope).

Thanks Hillary for opening the door to the oppressed people of Russia to also unite against a global tyrant.
Good vs evil, & good will prevail.
One day, Putin will go as Trump goes.

(6,288 posts)With what we now know of Putin's bold step into the demise of western US democracy, as well as Brexit, it only serves to reinforce those Allied nations.
Putin will be boxed in a corner.
Let us hope that it is so...

(23,299 posts)Hope Papadopoulos has some protection. He won't be well liked with the money laundering crowd after today when it is apparent he's been talking his head off for months.

(493 posts)was he paid? Or was he just a volunteer? How did he rank sitting on the national security team even if it was for only one time? Sanders said drumpf didn't even know the guy which he always says anyway so that is nothing new but the story goes, he was wearing a wire for the feds after he was caught lying and plead guilty. So today, guess who is having lunch with drumpf? Sessions ...who was also sitting at that table who had to of known this guy right?

Papadopolous was obviously on the inside, at least for some time. He must have been highly exposed to prosecution without any counter-leverage with Mueller's team. It was probably fairly easy to get him to flip on Trump's campaign.
I loved the way Mr. Mueller waited to announce the Papadopolous indictment! It allowed all of the right-wingers to shoot off their mouths before the Special Council dropped the hammer. This indictment shows that there were connections between the Russians and Trump's campaign. It's a bright warning shot.
Welcome to DU and keep posting!

(34,661 posts)Mr.Mueller. Notice lying to the FBI will put him in the slammer big time. Waiting for NY State to put the hammer on Poppy Boy and Manafort big time.

And how did this arrest go unnoticed by the Trump campaign? Or did it?

(2,065 posts)The first character "Shen" ('Shin' in Japanese) means "authentic". The second character, "Shih" ('Jitsu' in Japanese) means "full" or "with kernel or substance". Two characters that Trump has never known.
I know this stuff thanks to my childhood and upbringing in Japan, and my dad, who was a career foreign service officer and an expert in far eastern affairs, language and culture - the very kind of person that Rex Tillerson fired in droves when he hollowed out the State Department to suit Putin's ends of weakening US diplomacy and soft power around the world, thus making the global geopolitical situation a lot easier for him to exploit. Come to think of it - our country has, or had, fewer people working for it who were more useful and valuable to the nation than these career foreign service officers, who are all of fond memory now.
